Women’s mag love tips laughable
News from Chicago Sun-Times:

Updated: June 21, 2011 2:11AM

Jack says he was up rather late last night, “not sleepy and a little bored.” So what did he do? He picked up his 22-year-old daughter’s magazine, Women’s Health, the June issue.

“I don’t know why I did it. They had a photo of an impossibly thin young woman on the cover. That should have been the tip-off to just watch anything on cable until sleep took over. But I started perusing the listing of articles inside, and one in particular caught my eye. ‘Summer Sex — Make It Even Hotter! Experience the Big O! Together!’

“I guess the writer of this article didn’t consider the fact that men and women have their pleasure centers designed so differently that simultaneous orga…………… continues on Chicago Sun-Times

Steps to cleaning and staining a deck

Steps to cleaning and staining a deck
News from Knoxville News Sentinel:

It’s deck sprucing-up time, and Debbie Zimmer at the Paint Quality Institute has tips to share on proper staining techniques.

Assuming your deck doesn’t need repairs, the first step is to remove any loose paint or stain that may be present. This is done by scraping and sanding, or by treating the surface with a commercial deck conditioner, followed by careful power washing with plain water.

The prep work can be even easier if the deck has no loose paint or stain. Clean the surface with a commercial product, or make your own by mixing a cup of household bleach and a splash of soap with a gallon of warm water. After scrubbing the surface clean, rinse it thoroughly using a garden hose.

If, after cleaning, you still have areas with stubborn mildew, apply a solution of three parts water to one part bleach, allow the solution to sit on the affected surface for 20 minutes, then scrub off the mildew and rinse.

There are solvent-based and water-based formulations,…………… continues on Knoxville News Sentinel

100% environmental friendly
News from Sin Chew Jit Poh:

Translated by Chan Li Lin
Sin Chew Daily

PRAI, PENANG: Housewife Lu Bao-zhen is one of very few people who manage to fulfill 10 green initiatives to become “green citizens”, a programme introduced by the Penang state government.

In the past decade, not only did she adhere to the environmental principles, her protection of the environment is also reflected in her daily lives. She uses bicycle to travel around whenever possible, buy new clothes only once a year, as well as cut down the use of oil, salt and sugar when preparing meals for her family.

“Every month, rubbish from our house weighs only 1kg,” she claimed. This is her greatest achievement in applying the principles of environmental protection. It is also the biggest driving force for her to protect the environment tirelessly.

Green Tips: A Greener Way to Wash Your Car
News from Patch.com:

Did you realize that washing your car is one of the most environmentally unfriendly chores we do?

Household waste water enters sewers or septic systems and undergoes treatment before it is discharged into the environment, but water run off from car washing goes right into storm drains and eventually into rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands.

Washing your car in the driveway also can use as much as 150 gallons of fresh water, and washing it at a conventional car wash uses between 20 and 50 gallons according to estimates from Travis Kimball, director of marketing for Splash & Dash, a car wash in California that uses a mere eight gallons of fresh water per car.

If you wash your car at home, choose a biodegradable soap specifically formulated for automotive parts.

There are several brands such as Simple Green’s Car Wash or No Rinse™ Wash &…………… continues on Patch.com

You can live fabulously on a budget

You can live fabulously on a budget
News from The Daily News Journal:

If you’re focused on saving and investing for the future or paying off debt, you don’t have to sacrifice looking, feeling and living good.

Here are some tips to do so on a modest budget.

1. Do it yourself

It’s great to have someone wait on your every beck and call. When it’s time for the house to be cleaned, pay a maid service. When the car needs to be washed, go to have it detailed. When you’re ready to upgrade your interior design, get a decorator. Ahh, the good life.

However, depending on where you are in your debt-reduction and savings plan, it may be time to think about doing it yourself. Taking a little time to invest in your own hair-care maintenance, for example, only requires a couple of the right products, styling tools and perhaps a portable dryer you can sit under.

That landscaping job you’ve wanted to do may not be as hard as you think. It’s as easy as a trip to Lowe’s or Home Depot where you can ask questions and even sign up for a cl…………… continues on The Daily News Journal

Master Gardener: These tips will keep your roses thriving in summer

Master Gardener: These tips will keep your roses thriving in summer
News from Visalia Times-Delta:

The first full spring blush of roses is ending. This year the blooms were absolutely gorgeous.

Now the question is: How can I keep my roses blooming all summer long? Your plants may not look quite as grandiose as they did this spring, but you can still keep your roses looking beautiful throughout the summer and well into the fall with a little tender loving care.

Start by deadheading your roses (removing the spent blossoms)

I try to deadhead once a week and the roses respond to it well with new blooms. On first-year plants, deadhead back to the first outward facing five leaf cluster, cutting about 1/4 inch above the leaf cluster at an angle so that water drains away from the leaf cluster. On more established plants, cut back to an outward facing leaf cluster that has a bud at the base. Usually this is a five-leaf cluster, but not always. Cut back far enough that you have a strong branch to support the new growth. It is perfectly okay to shape your rosebush as …………… continues on Visalia Times-Delta

Bears Seen Across Utah Prompt Safety Tips from DWR
News from Dixie Press Online:

Black bear sightings are being reported across Utah. | Photo by Lynn Chamberlain, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources

A bear enters the cab of a truck on Boulder Mountain. Two young bears peak through cabin windows near Hobble Creek. And, just a few days ago, a mother bear and her yearling cub are seen wandering in Ogden Canyon.

From northern Utah to points down south, people are seeing bears across Utah right now. And in places they’ve never seen them before.

“I have lived in the canyon for 40 years,” says Keith Runcles, who owns the Oaks restaurant in Ogden Canyon, “and this is the first time [I’ve heard of people seeing bears].”

Kevin Bunnell, mammals program coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says there are two reasons why:

● June is the time of the year when mother bears kick their one-year-old cubs out on their own because the breeding season is starting.

The young bears, out on their own for the first time, tend to wa…………… continues on Dixie Press Online

Practically Green: Dishwasher soap substitutes not worth bad results
News from Memphis Commercial Appeal:

I can tolerate some inconveniences and discomfort from living green, but living with filmy dishes isn’t among them.

I’ve tried 10 or more homemade recipes for dishwasher detergent, but the dishes all come out icky. Especially the plastics. I’ve tried washing soda, baking soda, citric acid, vinegar, Borax, laundry soap, dish soap, salt, essential oil, Castile soap and I can’t remember what else. For every recipe, there’s someone out there who swears their dishes come out sparkling. Not me.

What is that white sticky dust on all the Tupperware? And what exactly happens to my plastic bowls in there to make all those white-coated nicks? What’s the “green lady” doing with all those plastics in the house, anyway? (Answer: Four kids and clumsy parents. I got tired of cleaning up the broken glass.)

I don’t want to rewash my dishes after I’ve already run them. Borax, which is in most homemade detergent recipes, is poisonous. How do I know that’s not what’s redepositing on…………… continues on Memphis Commercial Appeal
