Historic Monitor turret gets final cleaning

Historic Monitor turret gets final cleaning
News from Daily Press:

NEWPORT NEWS ——

Inside the wet, corrosion-scarred turret of the USS Monitor, conservation assistant Tina Gutshall lies belly down on a strip of plywood, peering intently through her protective glasses into a 5-inch-wide pocket of marine concretion.

Encased by iron rails, the rock-hard vein of sediment, minerals and rust looks like an unlikely target for the buzzing tip of her needlelike point scribe. But as she passes her vibrating tool over the surface for the umpteenth time, you can just see the fibrous tips of a piece of rope beginning to emerge from the reddish-orange deposit.

How many hours it’s taken to probe this far, Gutshall doesn’t know — and many more hours of tedious and physically taxing work will be required over the next few weeks before the artifact can be recovered. But she’s just part of…………… continues on Daily Press

L.A. Times Test Kitchen tips: Peeling and cleaning a pineapple
News from Los Angeles Times:

1. Remove the top of the pineapple.

2. Remove the bottom end, cutting so the pineapple will sit flat on a cutting board.

3. Using a chef’s knife, peel the pineapple.

4. Rotate the knife as you peel the skin, following the slant of the sides of the pineapple. Do not worry about peeling the eyes (the dark indentations) with the skin.

5. To remove the eyes, cut a wedge above and below a row of eyes. The eyes run in diagonal lines over the surface of the pineapple. Use the knife to remove a few at a…………… continues on Los Angeles Times

Hot home: This isn’t your mother’s washing machine
News from yourhome.ca:
July 27, 2011 Vicky Sanderson
SPECIAL TO THE STAR

Like so many things in this world, washing machines used to be so much simpler — cleaning our clothes with an uncomplicated combination of water, detergent and agitation. But they’re now rapidly evolving into increasingly sophisticated machines, according to Philippe Meyersohn, general manager for GE Appliances Canada.

“It may be a bit of an exaggeration, but there has probably been more innovation in the last five years than there was in the last 20,” says Meyersohn, citing the progress of vibration control as an example.

“The laundry room used to always be in the basement, where it was generally on a cement floor. If the washer does a dance on that surface, you probably don’t even know. When that happens on the first floor, it becomes much more of a concern,” …………… continues on yourhome.ca

Will YOUR dishwasher give you food poisoning?

Will YOUR dishwasher give you food poisoning?
News from Daily Mail:

By Charlotte Kemp

Last updated at 8:38 AM on 28th July 2011

While I’ve never claimed to be a Domestic Goddess, I never thought my household management skills were on a par with the poisoner Dr Crippen. But I have in my hand a set of laboratory tests and it makes very scary reading.

According to this document, I’ve got E.coli in the dishwasher, toxic fungus on the bath mat and goodness knows what festering in the toy box. As for the baby’s car seat, you don’t even want to go there…

Three weeks ago, I arranged for a scientist to take swabs from ten sites around my home to find out where potentially harmful bacteria and parasites might be lurking.

Shocking results: Charlotte was stunned t…………… continues on Daily Mail

LET’S COOK: Helpful tips on household cleaning after a flood

LET’S COOK: Helpful tips on household cleaning after a flood
News from Minot Daily News:

Last week as I stood in the devastation of my former landlady’s home Audrey Burke on University Avenue, my eyes witnessed hardwood floors heaved, French doors bathed by coffee-colored water, and the deposits of river and sewage water that left a paste as thick as silver polish.

Her home, once gleaming with warm invitation, was now saturated with a shade of dull and way past gloomy. A chill came over me as I thought about the sound of the waters entering this home and the moans this house spouted forth with this appalling assault.

My spirits were, however, lifted as I viewed the quaint, twin ivory corner cabinets with inviting salmon interiors. Water had come up to three feet plus on the main level, and the cabinets by a miracle have survived. Inside these cabinets resided the china treasures of Audrey including an elegant set of china passed to her by her mother. Stacks of bread, salad, and dinner plates richly scrolled with gold rested behind a cloudy glass door. Yet …………… continues on Minot Daily News

Cleaning Basements

Pump out standing water and remove all debris. Wait to pump until flood waters have receded below basement level. Allow debris to drain before disposal.

Strain away all liquids from trash. After straining trash, wrap in newspaper and store in tight-lid garbage cans until pick up.

There seems to be a new approach to science on TV. Anyone can do it, that’s how it goes. By do it, I mean present it. And by anyone, I mean the Top Gear chumps, and now Sun columnist Jane Moore. “I want to know what’s in all this stuff,” she says, at the start of Wonderstuff (BBC2). By stuff, she means everyday products for cleaning, DIY, personal hygiene – the bottles, cans, sprays and tubes in our cupboards and drawers.

Cleaning House

Another generally likable album from Saffire, Cleaning House contains plenty of the bold, sassy material (e.g., “Hungry Woman’s Blues,” “If Love Hurts, You’re Not Doing It Right,” “Tomorrow Ain’t Promised”) listeners have come to expect from the band that half seriously, half tongue-in-cheek, bills itself as the Uppity Blues Women. All three women take turns on lead vocals; Andra Faye McIntosh’s singing is particularly enjoyable. The 17-song acoustic set includes five originals from band member Gaye Adegbalola, three originals from bandmate Ann Rabson, and a spirited variety of songs written by old-timers like Memphis Minnie and contemporary songsmiths like Rick Estrin. ~ Steve Hoffman, Rovi
