From ketchup to grass, how to treat summertime stains

From ketchup to grass, how to treat summertime stains
News from Kansas City Star:

By JOHN SHULTZ

Special to The Star

PETER MONSEES

We all tend to indulge a little more in the summertime. Tackle smudges and splatters early (except for mud, which should dry first), and resist the urge to rub them out.

Summer, with its time off, trips and cookouts, reigns supreme as the season of fun. But as any toddler worth his romper can tell you, there’s no such thing as good, clean fun.

The simple joys of summer — eat, drink, play — carry with them their own hazards for clothes, upholstery and fabrics. Mustard from a hot dog. Grass-stained knees. Ice cream-coated handprints. Think the sights, smells and tastes of summer, and you’ll get the idea.

For those in need of a quick cleanup, there are as many options out there as there are potential kinds of stains. But there are a few quick rules to keep in min…………… continues on Kansas City Star

Aussie Detergent Brand Offers to Sponsor White House for $ 25M
News from AdAge.com:

Can it remove the taint of out-of-control spending?

An Australian brand, Vanish NapiSan, is looking to drum up some free publicity on the cheap by playing on the U.S.’s current budget mess. The Reckitt Benckiser brand has offered to “sponsor” the White House for $ 25 million in exchange for exclusive naming rights and signage displays on the lawn for the next five years.

Vanish NapiSan, apparently “known as the best stain remover in Australia,” is aiming for the White House because it’s “the most high-profile white building in the world and a logical choice.” Choosing a building to raise awareness for fabric cleaning products defies the term “logic,” but it’s as good a way as any to gain some free publicity in the U.S. [Editor's note: See how we resisted the urge to make a decade-old blue-dress joke?]

The company admits that the idea of sponsoring the White House “may seem outrageo…………… continues on AdAge.com

Heloise celebrates 50 years in syndication
News from Palm Beach Post:

Heloise Bowles Cruse was a journalism and household pioneer, who used her Selectric typewriter to connect to housewives across the country and then the world with her helpful hints. But she also might have been the first blogger.

“She wrote about our family,” says her daughter, the current Heloise (Ponce Kiah Marchelle Heloise Cruse Evans), who took over the column in 1977. “I was in high school and didn’t read my mother’s column, so I didn’t realize it. But she’d write ‘When my daughter comes home from school, she always does this’ or ‘Always make sure of this.’ “

Heloise’s famous “Hints from Heloise” column, born in the Honolulu Register as “Readers Exchange” in 1959, became syndicated in 1961. Fifty years later, it appears in more than 500 newspapers, including The Palm Beach Post, where it’s found Monday in Accent and occasionally Wednesday in Food. Humidity and Mold

Humidity and Mold
News from KXNet.com:
This week’s weather isn’t making things any easier on homeowners dealing with the flood.

It could actually be making things worse because mold grows even faster when it’s hot and humid.

Reporter Kate Schell speaks with the owner of a local cleaning company who has some tips on how people can protect themselves and their homes.

It doesn’t take a lot of water for mold to grow throughout a home

(Jerry Thomas/Specialized Cleaning and Restoration) “With the mold, humidity is going to rule what happens. If you have a puddle of water and 40-percent humidity more than likely nothing will happen. If the water is touching cellulose, whether it be wood or sheet rock, yes and the humidity is up there, you have a real chance.” Jerry Thomas, owner of Specialized Cleaning and Restoration, says mold growth absolutely accelerates when the relative humidity reaches 50 …………… continues on KXNet.com

Q: My husband has quit smoking but the smell of smoke still lingers throughout the house. Do you know how we can get rid of that smell without repainting or reupholstering everything?

L.B.

A: “Put containers of white distilled vinegar and baking soda throughout the house,” said Deborah Womack of the Cooperative Extension office. “These items should be in separate containers. Baking soda and vinegar will help to absorb various odors. She can also open up windows so that fresh air can come into the house.

“Also, she can use baking soda and white vinegar to wash painted walls because the odor can get in the walls. Baking soda and vinegar can be added when washing clothes along with detergent to remove odors.”

For fabric, check the care label for specific instructions before washing. If there’s no label or you’re not sure, you should check with a professional.

Cleaning Tips For Teeth With Braces

Cleaning Tips For Teeth With Braces
News from KITV Honolulu:
(NewsUSA) – Teenagers love things that are shiny and new — unless those things happen to be attached to their teeth. But with proper care and technique, your teen may eventually learn to love their newest physical trait.Braces have become commonplace in many families — approximately 4 million people receive orthodontic care in the U.S. each year. Most people undergo orthodontic treatment during adolescent and teenage years, when the permanent teeth have come in and treatment can be most effective.Yet, as many parents already know, getting teenagers to adhere to a cleaning routine can be tricky. For parents and teens who want to keep the cleanest teeth with braces, follow these tips:* Brush, brush, brush, brush. Most dentists recommend brushing twice a day if you don’t have braces. That doubles for people with braces. Clean teeth at least four times a day with a soft, rounded-bristle manual or electric toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Students offer tips for janitors
News from Columbia Daily Tribune:

Jim Basinger rolled his cleaning cart out of a men’s restroom on the first floor of the Bond Life Sciences Center at the University of Missouri.

“One down, 21 to go,” the custodian mumbled to two occupational therapy students who were shadowing him.

Cleaning so many bathrooms in a row can take a toll on a body, with the repetitive sweeping motions, reaching behind stools and lifting dozens of trash cans. Occupational therapy students in MU’s School of Health Professions are hoping to ease the custodians’ strains and sprains.

As part of a course in community assessment, two second-year occupational therapy students followed custodial crews around for a couple of days last week, recording their work routines. Armed with a camera and clipboard, Meagan Welsh and Brittany Abernathy caught on camera good and bad examples of physical movement and jotted down observations and poss…………… continues on Columbia Daily Tribune

7 tips for first-time pet owners
News from WPTV:

Here are a few tricks to help to prepare your pad for pets.

  1. Curtain call. Be sure your windows are properly draped with materials that deter cats from using them as a scratching post, repel pet fur and dander and aren’t hazardous. Consider a window treatment designer to get the right look that’s also pet safe.
  2. Plant perils. A number of plants found in your landscaping may be pleasing to the eye, but can be harmful to your pet. Be sure to ask your veterinarian what could be poisonous and develop a plan to replace it.
  3. Sit, stay. Obedience training is a must for new dogs with no manners and old dogs with bad habits. Your pooch can be the Emily Post of the canine world — with a little guidance from an expert animal trainer.

Flint residents come together to improve park and neighborhood
News from The Flint Journal – MLive.com:
FLINT, Michigan – About 40 residents came together Sunday in Rollingwood Park to continue to work together to start cleaning up the neighborhood and preventing crime.

Mike Drake, president of the Rollingwood Neighborhood Watch, said he wanted to get involved in the group to help make the neighborhood safer for his kids and bring the community together.

“If it looks bad, it’s going to get treated bad,” Drake, 36, said.

This is the fifth meeting of the watch group, but already changes have been made in the community.

The park has been cleaned up and the grass has been mowed, Drake said. That change has helped bring more of the community’s kids out to play.

“We’ve had in the last couple weeks more kids up here than I’ve ever seen since I’ve lived here,” Drake said. “We’re making progress.”

This week’s meeting brought a number of city representatives who came to address the residents.
