Halloween Safety & Health Tips

Halloween Safety & Health Tips
News from Valley News Live:

As children head out to trick or treat tonight, consider these costume safety tips from Consumer Reports:

  • Be sure the costume has a flame resistant label.
  • Avoid baggy, billowing skirts and cloaks that could brush up against a candlelit pumpkin.
  • Be careful when using paint on faces. The paint could trigger allergic reactions.
  • Beware of masks that could block a child’s vision.

Trick-or-treaters will be out in full force, but before going door-to-door you can stop at West Acres Mall where there’s trick or treating from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

There’s plenty of candy, giveaways and more for you and your kids. The mall is expecting more than 3,000 people.

Tips for what needs to be done in the garden in November
News from Hutchinson Leader:

Extension Educator – Agricultural Productions Systems

McLeod/Meeker counties

Winter protection for newly planted and smooth barked trees and shrubs is helpful for their development. Tender-barked trees need rodent protection and sun scald protection/tree guards. That stretchy tree wrap is no longer recommended. Use plastic tubes with ventilation holes or tie boards to the south-southeast side of the tree. Hardware cloth cylinders will keep voles and rabbits from chewing up shrubs. Have the tasks associated with smooth barked trees and shrubs done by Thanksgiving.

Newly planted as well as young trees and shrubs should have already been mulched by this time. Try mulching with woodchips or shredded bark to allow you to continue watering later into the season. If you have not mulched those trees yet be sure to do it in the near future. Evergreens should be watered late into the season to avoid moisture stress before they go into dormancy.

Garbage Maven: Tide Pods ride wave of change in packaging

Garbage Maven: Tide Pods ride wave of change in packaging
News from Los Angeles Times:

SC Johnson introduced a version of its popular Windex window cleaner earlier this year that’s sold in a “snip ‘n’ pour” pouch, above left, so customers can refill old bottles with a concentrated Windex formula diluted with water from the tap. The company also is test marketing a contraption called the All-in-One, above right, a dispenser for concentrated versions of Scrubbing Bubbles, Fantastik and other cleansers. And in March, Procter & Gamble is scheduled to introduce Tide Pods, a “compacted” version of liquid laundry detergent in single-use capsules meant to eliminate the need to measure and reduce the overuse of soap.

These kinds of super-concentrated cleaners have come and gone since the ’70s, with mostly limited success. But consumers will see a resurgence of them in the months to come due to the success of niche cleaning products and pressure f…………… continues on Los Angeles Times

MIT revives electrolyzed water at Endicott House
News from Mass High Tech:

Thursday, October 27, 2011

By Rodney H. Brown

MIT is no stranger to innovation, but the school has resurrected a technology that flourished a few years ago — not on its lab benches in Cambridge but at a conference center it owns in Dedham. The technology is electrolyzed water used as a cleaner and disinfectant.

Back in 2006, a Woburn startup had developed a technology that would ionize salt water to produce an effective and non-toxic disinfectant that shares some chemistry with chlorine bleach but is safe enough to drink, and is more effective than chlorine bleach as a disinfectant. That company,

AAOS offers fall clean-up safety tips
News from News-Medical.net:

Keep safety in mind during your autumn clean-up

Fall is the season for football, changing leaf colors, and – because of yard work – back injuries, tumbles from ladders and lawn mower accidents.

Each year, thousands of Americans are injured cleaning gutters, raking leaves, washing windows and doing other chores. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) urges people to take the proper safety precautions to reduce the number of cleaning-related accidents this season.

STATISTICS:
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

  • In 2010, more than 35,500 people injured themselves using a stepladder
  • More than 127,000 were injured while operating a lawn mower

UPDATED: 4:04 pm EDT October 28, 2011

Cherie and I just returned from a great fishing trip at Cape Hatteras. I’m pleased to announce the tough folks on Hatteras Island have got everything under control. Not only that, but the fishing was great. There wasn’t a single day when we didn’t catch enough fish for dinner. Some days we could have fed a huge crowd. I caught two drum, a 36” and a 38”, and Cherie caught a 42”. We caught bluefish on metal almost every day.Going on a trip like this is great but sometimes when we get home, it’s a little tough garnering the gumption to get everything properly put back in shape. It takes me about five hours to get everything ready for the next time. But the reward is knowing that getting ready for the next trip will be easy. It also means my gear wi…………… continues on WXII The Triad

Tips to keep the holidays happy and healthy for asthma and allergy sufferers
News from Creston News Advertiser:
By (ARA)

(ARA) – For millions of allergy sufferers, “allergy season” doesn’t really end when warm weather leaves. With more time spent indoors where allergens like pet dander and volatile organic compounds linger, cold weather months can be just as unpleasant for people with allergies as spring and summer when pollen fills the air.

The holidays can be particularly difficult, as we visit family and friends and welcome guests – and the allergens they bring with them – into our homes.

“The holidays can present a variety of challenges for asthma and allergy patients,” says New York City allergist Dr. Cliff Bassett, an ambassador for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). “Our indoor environment changes in many ways during the holidays, from having new people in our homes to bringing in potential airway irritants (exposure to potpourri, scented candles, etc.) as well as introduction of pine trees and dusty old holiday decora…………… continues on Creston News Advertiser

Regulator to investigate Tennant over ‘wonder water’
News from Manufacturer.com:

The Advertising Standards Authority has agreed to investigate professional cleaning equipment manufacturer Tennant, following concerns that it has misled the industry.

The subject of the investigation is a series of adverts that suggest Tennant’s scrubber-driers, equipped with the contentious ec-H2O technology, can use electrolysis to break down normal tap water into acid and alkaline components that then act as a powerful cleaning agent, removing the need to buy floor cleaning detergent. Tennant also claims that the ec-H2O technology has proved its worth.

Kärcher, one of Tennant’s competitors, is responsible for asking the ASA to investigate. Kärcher has tested Tennant’s advertising claims both in-house and via an independent scientific laboratory…………… continues on Manufacturer.com

3 Tips for Safely Cleaning Up Mold

3 Tips for Safely Cleaning Up Mold
News from Bryan Ellis Real Estate Letter:

Note:  The information below is a layperson’s guide to mold issues.  This doesn’t constitute legal, health or professional advice.  Seek advice from appropriate professionals on any mold issues in your property.

We all have heard at least one horror story about mold. You probably know that mold is a fungus – actually, there are many types of mold, and they are all different types of fungi – that grows in moist conditions. When you encounter a building that has been “infected” with mold, you definitely need to have it checked to make sure that the infiltration is not a threat to present or future inhabitants’ health. For the purposes of this article, however, we will assume that the mold in question has been determined to be a fairly minor issue and simply needs to be cleaned up thoroughly and effectively so that the problem does not recur.

Generally, if the area of mold is fewer than three patches in total, each smaller than a square meter, you can clean up th…………… continues on Bryan Ellis Real Estate Letter

Tuesday tips round-up: Compass, IHG, Fuller’s…
News from ShareCast:
LONDON (SHARECAST) – Whatever its intrinsic merits, the attempted purchase of ISS of Denmark by G4S for 5.2 billion has focused attention on the more cautious acquisition strategy being pursued by another big name in the outsourcing sector, Compass Group, says the Tempus column in the Times. Compass is buying Integrated Cleaning Management for an undislosed but probably small sum, in the context of the group as a whole, with the company having revenues of 61 million in the latest financial year. This takes Compass further into cleaning and support services and away from its core food operation. The shares have always commanded a high multiple because of that record of growth, but 13 times’ earnings for the year just started does not look unreasonable. A strong hold, says the Times.

The US economy saw tepid growth in the second quarter, with analysts increasingly worried about the strength of the recovery. But this uncertain backdro…………… continues on ShareCast

House plants need TLC to thrive indoors after summer vacation

House plants need TLC to thrive indoors after summer vacation
News from Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier:

Sweaters and sweatshirts have replaced shorts and sleeveless shirts.

It’s Crocs and socks, instead of flip-flops.

Brisk winds stand our hair on end as we wrap up garden chores like cleaning out pots, raking colorful leaves, wiping down the lawn mower and sharpening tools before storing them so they’ll be ready to go next spring.

I like the quickening rhythm of days winding down in the garden, and I relish the final fragrant yellow rose to bloom, exquisitely shaped, and the fat red rosehips forming on the William Baffin climber. “Rosy Returns” and “Happy Returns” daylilies push out a light re-bloom and the Boston ivy on my house resembles burgundy leather.

Then there are all the heavy-duty projects this year, including renovating a long flowering border and building a brick path from the back porch to the patio I built the previous fall, that give me a great sense of satisfaction.

Now I need a break. It’s finally time to let go and move indoors. Vac…………… continues on Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier

Some Steps to Prevent a Dryer Fire

Some Steps to Prevent a Dryer Fire
News from Patch.com:

After being featured in Patch, Mark Wegiel, aka “Mr. Appliance,” made the Huffington Post. Wegiel returns to Patch this week with some helpful information on how to protect yourself and your property from a dryer fire:

Every day you take precautions to keep your family safe. You keep flammable materials in a safe environment, make sure all smoke alarms are working properly and teach your kids what to do in case of a fire. But what about the potential fire hazard lurking in your laundry room?

Lint and debris in and around your dryer could be putting your home at risk for a dryer fire. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that in 2006, there were 17,700 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines resulting in 360 civilian injuries and 15 civilian deaths. The leading cause of dryer fires was failure to clean the appliance.
