Coming clean
News from Boston.com:

In March, New Englanders open their windows, eager for fresh air. But when they see swirling dust glistening in the sun, they know it’s time to get to work. We chatted with area cleaning professionals to get the down and dirty on 10 different aspects of spring cleaning. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but should get you off to a clean start.

Jonathan Glazer, owner of PowerBees, a mold removal and remediation company, recommends controlling basement humidity with self-draining dehumidifiers. If it smells musty, have the air tested. Check for visual cues, too. “Look up at floor joists: anything white and cottony is probably mold,’’ Glacer says. And check cardboard boxes and Sheetrock for gray or black spots. Mold can grow in attics too, resulting from condensation caused by poor ventilation. Glacer says that soffit vents covered by insulation are the most common culprit. The solution: Pull insulation away from eaves and vents to help get air moving.

“Unfinished attics and basements make terrible storage places,’’ says Christa Hagearty, president and chief executive of Dependable Cleaners. Keep clothing in dark, dry, cool environments in breathable containers to prevent mold from growing. That means no plastic. Hagearty recommends aci…………… continues on Boston.com

Tips for ‘green’ cleaning

Tips for ‘green’ cleaning
News from Sacramento Bee:

Looking for alternatives to chemical cleaners? Try these “green” methods to spring clean. They come courtesy of Betty Nicholson of Mothers Cleaning Co-Op, Steve and Paula Mumm of Merry Maids, “Haley’s Hints Green Edition” (NAL Trade, $ 14, 224 pages) by Graham and Rosemary Haley and “Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Home” (Wellness Central, $ 19.99, 240 pages) by Thelma Meyer.

In the kitchen

Appliances: Sprinkle with baking soda, spritz with water and scrub. The soda removes grime, grease and odors. Rinse with plain water. Inside the refrigerator, keep an open box of baking soda to absorb odors. After three months, put that used baking soda down the garbage disposal to freshen it.

Counters: Spritz with 1 cup of white vinegar mixed with 1 cup of warm water. Wipe dry.

Wood cutting board: Cut a lemon in half. Sprinkle the board with salt. Use the cut lemon as a scrubber with the salt.

Aluminum pots and pans: To remove discoloration, mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 1 1/2 tablespoons cream of tartar. Add to pot with 4 cups of water and heat over low heat. Simmer until stains disappear. For residue at bottom of pan, pour in 1/2 cup each of white vinegar and hot water. Let soak three hours, then wash.

Spring Cleaning: Tips for Quick Routine
News from MyFox Dallas:

Published : Tuesday, 20 Mar 2012, 9:05 AM CDT

(EndPlay Staff Reports) – Let’s face it: The last thing you want to do with you free time is clean house. Unfortunately, it’s a necessary evil. Here are a few room-by-room spring cleaning tips to help you get it all done in record time.

Living room

The carpet in this high-traffic room probably gets a lot of abuse. Get started by surveying the room and hone in on areas that might need extra attention (foyer, where people might eat, where kids play). Focus on the problem areas with a vacuum, taking about 30 seconds extra in the high-traffic areas. If you have area rugs, quickly vacuum the top and just fold over the corners to get the bottom. Treat any stubborn stains with carpet cleaner by following the manufacturer’s instructions, and use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process. More from Real Simple .

Kitchen

Some folks say the kitchen is the heart of your home. Keep it clean by doing dishes after every meal; don’t let them pile up. Wipe off all surfaces after cooking or making a snack. Rain or Shine, Staples Make Sales
News from msnbc.com:

A shopper may give up some luxuries during a recession, but a consumer staple like baking soda is much harder for her to leave on the shelf. Church & Dwight, Clorox, and Colgate-Palmolive sell products that their customers need to buy, which insulates them from the fads and trends that cause wide swings in other retailers’ sales.

Church & Dwight makes Arm & Hammer baking soda, and this staples seller showed steady revenue growth and strong margins over the last few years even while other consumer oriented firms had to offer big discounts to keep their customers. Church & Dwight significantly improved its gross margin during the last few years, which increased from 39.1 percent in 2007 to 44.7 percent in 2011.

The Arm & Hammer brand doesn’t just include the company’s familiar boxes of baking soda. Church & Dwight also sells Arm & Hammer brand cat litter, toothpaste, and laundry detergent, as shoppers know that Arm & Hammer makes bad smells go away. Although a bargain hunter could buy lower end cleaning products to save money, quality is very important with these types of products because cheap cleaning products could leave a shopper’s house dirty and smelly. The Arm & Hammer brand also provides opportunities for Church & Dwight to add more…………… continues on msnbc.com

Smart Shopper: Carpet Cleaners
News from NorthJersey.com:

Regular vacuum cleaners hardly touch the ground-in dirt and oils that stick to carpet fibers. Carpet cleaners are designed to go further: They typically spray on a detergent, sometimes working it in with moving brushes, then vacuum up the dirty solution.

BISSELL BIG GREEN

A machine’s effectiveness depends in part on how aggressively it scrubs to loosen dirt and how powerfully its suction pulls dirt in, but too much aggressiveness could damage carpeting.

If you have a lot of carpeting and a house full of kids and pets, here are the types of cleaners to consider.

Rental deep cleaners

Often available at a supermarket, hardware store or home center for about $ 20 to $ 30 a day, these upright machines combine one tank for dispensing cleaning solution, a second tank for holding dirty solution, a vacuum and a fixed or moving brush in a single, heavy unit. Performance and convenience vary from one machine to the next. Look for the cleanest, least-worn brushes on any machine you’re thinking of renting.

Full-sized cleaners

Lighter and less bulky than typical rental machines, these work by scrubbing in a solution of water and detergent, then vacu…………… continues on NorthJersey.com

Spring Cleaning Your Mind and Body

Spring Cleaning Your Mind and Body
News from Huffington Post:

On Feb. 2, 2012, our dear friend Punxsutawney Phil declared that we would have six more weeks of winter. Well, time’s up! So ready your feather duster and eye up the balled-up bathing suit in the back of your closet, because spring is coming! While traditionally my OCD (Obsessive Cleaning Disorder) would strangle me with old rags and choke me with dust bunnies for suggesting that we part from the traditional spring cleaning activities — I’m doing just that.

So forget the baseboards (for now, you have to clean them eventually), and face the mirror, yourself and that balled-up bathing suit because it’s time to do a good old-fashioned spring cleaning of your mind and body.

Mind

You clean your home from top to bottom, and spring cleaning your mind and body follow suit. Without the right frame of mind, you’re doing no better than trying to wash your windows with Crisco. A good place to start is with a simple three-minute meditation, as recommended by Oprah.com. If you think meditating is just for the ultra-zen, tie-dye wearing group, think again. UCLA has done a study that suggests that

Outlook spring cleaning: 4 tips
News from Business Management Daily:

Taming the Outlook monster is something we all need help with, so here are a few easy ways to start cleaning up your Outlook inbox.

Sort by sender

This is a good first step. It allows you to easily spot and delete email from advertisers whose messages you no longer need. This also makes it easy to spot email from friends and family, which don’t have a real retention requirement.

Tip: Make a separate folder for emails that contain pictures you might want to save. Then, just like in “olden” days, you can “cut” them out and “paste” them into a PowerPoint album and save that instead of the email.

Start your Outlook organizing here!

Search for old emails

If you have accumulated several years of emails, start by creating search folders for each year. Search folders aren’t actual folders; it’s a search criteria and a way to see all email, no matter what folder it is in. The largest unit of time allowed is months, so you’ll need to search for mail that’s older than a year by specifying 12 months, 24 months, and so on.  Drag all emails into a folder named for the year (2009, 2010). Add a task item to your list to start cleaning up one year at a time.

Check with your tec…………… continues on Business Management Daily

Four Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Cuisine

Four Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Cuisine
News from Huffington Post:

As temperatures start to rise and skies start to clear, it’s time for spring cleaning: open the windows, beat the rugs and clear out a winter’s worth of dust. Maybe this year, while we clean our homes, we should focus on the kitchen. Spring is a time of renewal, of first plantings and pea shoots. What better time to clean up your family’s food habits? Here are four simple changes that I’m trying to bring into my own home this spring:

Tip #1: Introduce an unfamiliar whole food into family meals each month.
Sounds pretty easy, right? At first I was going to write down “every week,” but this working mom will be a little more realistic. If I count restaurant visits, I am in decent shape.

I’ve adopted this idea from my neighbor Ruby, who has been building new foods into meals for several years. Her kids, now 7 and 9, have even evolved a related game. When she introduces an ingredient, she sends the kids online to research a few key facts about its geographical origins. They have a world map on the kitchen wall and the kids apply stickers tracking where the new foods they eat first came from.

Ruby says she’s constantly amazed by the factoids the kids unearth about familiar ingredients as well. She didn’t know that melons and cucumbers were from the same family, or that the eggplant is related to…………… continues on Huffington Post

Top 10 Green Spring Cleaning Tips
News from Huffington Post:

Since we survived winter — if you can call it that — and have already begun the transition to spring, I wanted to share some of my favorite green, spring cleaning tips. And of course, with Saint Patrick’s Day just behind us… what better time to be green?

1. Give your home a check-up

After the relatively warm winter we just experienced, I’m bracing my home for a sticky summer. To keep the hot air out, consider a home energy assessment to make sure that your air conditioning doesn’t seep through the cracks in your home. Follow the examples of folks from Energize New York, Connecticut’s Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge, or TC Saves in Traverse City, Michigan, and seal up those windows and doors! It’ll keep you cool and save you money.

2. Turn off the TV and go outside

The flat-screen TV continues to be the biggest energy drain in the American home — and that’s just when you think it’s off! So put the TV on a power strip and really turn it off. And at the same time, turn off that DVD player you haven’t used since November and plug the Wii into that power strip too. Now, head outside and feel the flow of the sun, not the TV.

Spring Cleaning Tips From the Experts

Spring Cleaning Tips From the Experts
News from Patch.com:

It is that time of the year, when Mother Nature ushers out Ole Man Winter, to start on that long list of maintenance projects, that if done right, will save you time, headaches and even money in the future.

According to experts, you should break up your spring maintenance project list into four basic areas: home utilities, exterior, lawn and interior.

Deconstructing it in such a way allows you not to get overwhelmed with the task at hand. It also allows you to schedule out your spring maintenance effort, especially with the outdoor tasks and projects, that depend heavily on the weather.

Home utilities: Inspect all of your home’s utilities including the hot water heater, air conditioner, furnace and sump pump. Refer to your user manual for instructions on how to inspect and maintain these units. If you need maintenance done by an expert, call now to schedule an appointment, since the spring can be a busy time for them.

  • Change your air filter on your air conditioner and furnace, according to Ralph Ignatowski at Village Ace Hardware in Glendale. Dirty filters will cause the air conditioner and furnace to blow dust into your vents and ultimately throughout your house. A dirty air filter also will put stress on the unit, causing it to malfunction. Check your user manual for instructions for changing the filter.

How to clean your house when you are busy
News from Fox News:

Maybe you are like me, you have way too much on your plate, and you have a strong need for a clean home. While it may seem like a simple solution to hire someone to do the cleaning in order to obtain those two goals; that may not work for everyone. Naturally, cost might be a factor, but you may feel you don’t want people you don’t know well in your home, or you might get satisfaction and peace of mind from just doing the cleaning yourself. Here are a few tips to making a full schedule and a clean home work for you – before you get overwhelmed.

Scheduling the time

If you have a heavy schedule or a lot going on in your life, one way to take some of the pressure off of yourself is to schedule specific times to clean or organize. Sometimes, just knowing there’s a carved out time to do the work may help you let go of some of the worry. I have often found that the worry over getting the cleaning done can use up too much mental and even emotional energy, making it harder to do other work as well. The cleaning time can be broken down to deal with specific projects (like washing dishes) or you can schedule a few 15-minute clean-up times a week. You’re better off not leavi…………… continues on Fox News
