5 Dog Grooming Tips

5 Dog Grooming Tips
News from Healthy Fur, Teeth, Ears and Nails – The Bakersfield Voice:

Using a specialist dog groomer is actually good decision considering professional dog grooming companies know about the correct technique to groom dogs plus they know what is perfect for your specified breed. How often you must take your dog to your groomer depends heavily relating to the breed of your dog. It also is determined by your dog’s way of living. Ask your family pet groomer how often they think it’s best to bring your puppy for grooming to keep your ex looking and feeling their best. Between visits, it is important that you continually groom your canine friend as well. The following tips are with a professional dog groomer and they will let you maintain your dog’s the teeth, skin, fur and your overall health.

SCRUBBING: Between visits for the groomer, brushing your pet dog not only eliminates the loose fur and is great for shedding, but what’s more, it stimulates the skin and helps with circulation. If you have a long haired canine, brushing is mainly important. Brushing your doggies fur can even help to prevent mats and tangles and protect your ex from having to be shaved or coming from endless brushing (which your pet will not treasure!) A groomer will brush your canine friend, normally before shampooing, and will let you know if they detect any parasites to the skin. Shedding is mostly a natural process for ones pet. Many groomers employ a Furminato…………… continues on Healthy Fur, Teeth, Ears and Nails – The Bakersfield Voice

County Fare: 10 tips for backyard barbecuers
News from Red Bluff Daily News:

Skewered shrimp wrapped in bacon rest next to fresh peaches on Eric Devlin’s grill. ( MCT photo )

Eric Devlin has enjoyed cooking outdoors for as long as he can remember, but about six years ago, it dawned on the Dix Hills, N.Y., event manager that grilling “isn’t just a matter of throwing meat on a hot grill.”

Devlin, now an avid competition barbecuer and editor of the online BBQ magazine Smoke Signals, realized that to get better results, he was “going to have to become more systematic about grilling, pay more attention to basic skills.”

Here are his top 10 tips for becoming a better griller:

1. Clean the grill when it’s hot.
Food won’t stick to a clean grill. And, what’s more, Devlin said, “the crud left over from last night’s meal will impart an acrid flavor that you don’t want.” There are scores of grill-cleaning products out there, but Devlin’s method is simple and cheap: “As soon as you take the food off the grill, use a good grill brush to scrape it down.”

2. Pay attention to your fuel.

Car-cleaning care tips

Car-cleaning care tips
News from New York Daily News:

We who love our cars like to keep ‘em clean, but you wouldn’t wash your dishes with Murphy’s Oil soap or do your laundry with dishwashing liquid, would you?  Neither would I. Washing your car yourself carries its own set of unique instructions. Here are a few tips to keep your ride clean and its coat shiny.

Use a proper car cleaner to wash your car

Dishwashing liquids and detergents will indeed clean dirt off your car, but they also take wax, silicone and polymers off the finish, leaving your paint job vulnerable. If you’re loathe to purchase available commercial soap products just for your car – and if you’re ecology-minded, this makes even more sense – use castile soap, which works just as well and carries no ground-poisoning agents.

Just because your car looks shiny doesn’t mean it isn’t dirty.

Some people like to do a quickie job on their car’s finish, spraying with a bottle of water and wiping with a rag or paper towel as they walk around it. But at the very least, your car should be rinsed first as fine particles invisible to the naked eye will cling to your car after even a short ride, and scratch your finish if you merely spray and wipe.  (See below for products meant specifically for spraying and wiping post-wax.)

Don’t use t-shirts, diapers or flannel to clean…………… continues on New York Daily News

Time-Tested Mr. Rooter Tips For Unclogging Drains
News from Virtual-Strategy Magazine:

Mr. Rooter’s Daily Tips: Expert plumbing advice on unclogging household drains.

Youngstown, Ohio (PRWEB) May 30, 2012

A drain blockage may be in the trap under the fixture, in a branch line carrying waste from several fixtures to the main drain, or in the main house drain or its connection to the sewer. According to Bob Beall, Pittsburgh’s most referred plumber, “if only one fixture is blocked or sluggish, start by cleaning its trap.” The president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing Pittsburgh offers free daily plumbing tips at the new Mr. Rooter Media Center. Beall hosts a LIVE chat for residential or commercial consumers wishing to get answers to common plumbing problems.

“Clogged drains are one of the most common questions posed by homeowners,” says Mr. Rooter. “A common force-cup plunger and a drain-and-trap auger are not only the easiest unclogging tools to use, but also the most effective and the safest,” according to Beall. Beall adds, that devices that use compressed air often impact the blockage and may loosen or blow apart fragile pipes such as lavatory traps.

Mkksmom thank you for your suggestions! I really appreciate it. I SO know what you mean about information overload. I have started to create my own little notebook to keep track of all of the information I come across. I’ll share it here. And I know some of these things are controversial…but most are really great ideas and I’m excited to implement them in our new home. We’re going all out with this…lol it will be interesting with no TV or microwave. We’ll have to see how it goes.

General Information

Fluoride is a metabolic poison and will actually damage your teeth. There is enough fluoride in a tube of toothpaste to kill a small child.

Get Rid of Toxic Plastics

Most plastics leach potential carcinogens and other dangerous chemicals that can screw up your endocrine system. The worst offenders are polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC), polystyrene (PS, a.k.a. Styrofoam, when extruded), and polycarbonate (PC). Steer clear of  these in cooking-oil bottles, cling wrap, microwaveable ovenware, Styrofoam containers, hard-plastic drinking bottles, and in the plastic liners of almost all food and soft-drink cans. Avoid them by opting for glass or cardboard packaging, storing your food in glass or ceramic containers, seeking out cardboard to-go packaging, rinsing all canned food thoroughly, and switching to stainless steel drin…………… continues on Making My Own Cleaning Products? Memorial Day Cook-Out Tips

Memorial Day Cook-Out Tips
News from Patch.com:

Nothing rings in the summer months better than barbecue, especially here in Southern California.

And with the arrival of Memorial Day, that means more cooking outdoors. It is is important to follow food safety guidelines to prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying and causing foodborne illness. Use these simple guidelines for grilling food safely provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service.

From the Store: Home First

When shopping, buy cold food like meat and poultry last, right before checkout. Separate raw meat and poultry from other food in your shopping cart. To guard against cross-contamination — which can happen when raw meat or poultry juices drip on other food — put packages of raw meat and poultry into plastic bags.

Plan to drive directly home from the grocery store. You may want to take a cooler with ice for perishables. Always refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours. Refrigerate within 1 hour when the temperature is above 90 °F.

At home, place meat and poultry in the refrigerator immediately. Freeze poultry and ground meat that won’t be used in one or two days; freeze other meat within four to five days.

Thaw Safely

Completely thaw meat and poultry before grilling so it cooks more evenl…………… continues on Patch.com

Tips for cleaning out your garage with kid safety and the environment in mind

Tips for cleaning out your garage with kid safety and the environment in mind
News from OregonLive.com:

Spring is a great time to clean out and organize your garage to make it safe and efficient for your family. When it comes to the garage, organization and safety tend to go hand in garden glove.

“It’s important to clean out your garage regularly to keep hazards at bay,” says Anne Blumer,  a professional organizer in Portland. “The garage tends to be the graveyard of the home — it’s where our things go to die. When we can’t decide whether to part with something it goes out to the garage and we say to ourselves, ‘I’ll decide later.’”

That kind of thinking can lead to clutter, and clutter in the garage can be dangerous because people can trip over things, cut themselves on sharp tools or be hit by falling objects.

Blumer’s favorite trick for staying on top of garage clutter is to keep three bins in the space at all times: one labeled “sell,” one labeled “recycle” and one labeled “throw away.” Every few months, she suggests, go through your garage and put your excess stuff into those bins. When the bins get full, empty them at your favorite thri…………… continues on OregonLive.com

Doctors report rise in kids eating detergent packs

Doctors report rise in kids eating detergent packs
News from KTVN:

By NOMAAN MERCHANT
Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) – Miniature laundry detergent packets arrived on store shelves in recent months as an alternative to bulky bottles and messy spills. But doctors across the country say children are confusing the tiny, brightly colored packets with candy and swallowing them.

Nearly 250 cases have been reported this year to poison control centers. Though they remain a tiny fraction of the thousands of poisoning calls received every year, doctors are concerned. The symptoms they see in connection with ingesting the packets – such as nausea and breathing problems – are more severe than typical detergent poisoning. No deaths have been reported.

“We’re not quite sure why it’s happening,” said Dr. Kurt Kleinschmidt, a Dallas toxicologist and professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. “But we’ve clearly had some kids who have become much more ill. We look at these pods as being clearly more dangerous than the standard detergent.”

Tide, Purex and other detergent manufacturers introduced different versions of the packets earlier this year. The lightweight, colorfully swirled plastic packets contain a single-use amount of detergent that dissolves in water. They’re intended to be dropped into a laundry machine in place of liquid or powder detergent.

Get Organized! Cleaning Pros Offer Tips

Get Organized! Cleaning Pros Offer Tips
News from Entrepreneur:

Something about the nice weather brings out the cleaning bug.

Chalk it up to longer days, summer moves, remodeling projects and the compulsion to throw open the windows and start fresh. Not surprisingly, franchises that specialize in these areas see business pick up in late spring and early summer.

We spoke to outfits that provide everything from decluttering to reorganizing. Here’s a look at what’s trending in each area – plus tips on how you can get organized yourself.

Decluttering

Betsy Fein, founder of Clutterbusters, a Rockville, Md. personal organization franchisor, says every season brings different clientele. In the winter, it’s customers who have made New Year’s resolutions; in the fall, it’s parents or students preparing for back-to-school season. But in spring and summer, it’s anyone and everyone who needs to streamline the clutter. Clutterbusters, which she started in 2007, charges clients by the hour with a four-hour minimum. The company specializes in “hoarder situations,” Fein says, though simple paper management is a popular service.

Her tip for decluttering:

  • Get and stay organized. Don’t think of your clean sweep as an all-or-nothing mission. Instead, make a routine checklist and break it up by room or…………… continues on Entrepreneur

A clean house is a best seller
News from Chicago Tribune:

When it comes to the little things that sellers do to make their homes stand out from the competition, a new splash of paint is usually at the top of the list. Sprucing up the front yard and removing the clutter you have learned to live with over the years also rank high.

But the No. 1 step you can take, according to a recent survey of real estate agents, is cleaning the place from top to bottom. Spending a few hundred bucks for cleaning supplies, rolling up your sleeves and getting to work will pay huge dividends, dollar for dollar, according to nearly all the 500 agents who participated in the HomeGain poll.

Actually, cleaning has ranked as the top home improvement suggested by realty professionals ever since HomeGain began asking the question in 2003. In the latest survey, the agents said spending $ 400 on cleaning is likely to gain sellers $ 2,000 more at closing. That’s a 400 percent return on investment.

Of course, there is clean and then there is really clean. Here are some tips gleaned mainly from the folks at The Maids, a residential cleaning service with about 150 franchises in 40 states, with suggestions from professional house cleaner Mary Findley (also known as Mary Moppins) thrown in for good measure:

You may not look up when you walk around your house, but would-be buyers do. They look everywhere, so knock d…………… continues on Chicago Tribune
