Quick tips to turn your unhealthy home into a healthy one
News from Fox News:

Your home is a place to show off your sense of style – but it can also have a profound effect on your health and happiness.

Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, a designer and founder of ApartmentTherapy.com, shared some tips on how to rid your place of common ‘unhealthy’ elements.

“Your home is an extension of your body,” Gillingham-Ryan explained.  “In fact, it’s the only space you really control because the street, your office – none of that is really your own.”

According to Gillingham-Ryan, clutter is a common problem that can stress you out and overstimulate your eyes.

“What’s going on in the room is what you take inside,” Gillingham-Ryan said.  “So if it’s cluttered and disorganized in the room, you’re going to feel cluttered and inside yourself.”

If furniture is getting in your way, or impossible to clean, you may need to re-think the arrangement of the room, he said.

Lack of color can also bring down your mood.  If a room is full of neutrals, Gillingham-Ryan recommended adding a pop of color.  Only 20 percent more color in a room can make a huge difference.

“Some people love color and they want to put it everywhere,” Gillingham-Ryan said.  “For them, I urge to pull back a little bit.  A little bit goes a long way.”

Overall, it only takes a few minutes to turn an unhealthy space into a healthy space.  Spend a few minut…………… continues on Fox News

News from Virtual-Strategy Magazine:

Solar power is one of the most popular forms of renewable energy. A cleaning product like CeNano’s Nanotol may help make solar panels 20 percent more efficient.

(PRWEB) May 23, 2012

Research from the University of California, San Diego recently showed that homes using solar panels stay five degrees cooler in the summer than those with direct sun exposure, which was welcome news as warmer summer months quickly approach, said Thomas Uen, CEO for CeNano.net.

Click here to learn how using a cleaning product like CeNano’s Nanotol has been shown to improve solar panel efficiency by as much as 20 percent.

Dirt cannot attach as easily to solar panels treated with Nanotol, which means the surface stays clean longer and produces more energy, Uen said.

“Using Nanotol is also a way to protect your solar panel investment from deterioration over time,” he said.

Laundry tips: How To Make White Shirts Last
News from Newsolio:

A white shirt is one of life’s great essentials, a wardrobe staple. Crisp, clean, fresh. Ah, yes, fresh.
Of course, since it is white it is going to show the inevitable signs of wear and tear. A little special attention, however, gets you a lot more mileage.

Here’s how:

Basic care and feeding:

Go with laundering over dry cleaning, which uses chemicals that are hard on a shirt. Best-case scenario? Wash your shirts at home, where you can control settings and temperatures (professional cleaners tend to crank up the water and air temps). Any old laundry detergent will do. If your shirt just needs freshening up — usually the case — put your machine on a gentle cycle and warm wash. If it’s truly grimy, go hotter.

Laundry tips: How To Make White Shirts Last

Don’t over-dry — too harsh. Air-dry on a plastic hanger or rack if possible.

Take it easy on starch. It makes the fibers brittle and can shorten the shirt’s life span.

What to do when white starts a slow fade to yellow or gray?

First, when you wash the shirt, make sure all the soap, which can leave a dingy film, is being rinsed out. Run the shirt through the rinse cycle twice every now and then.

There are also laundry products spe…………… continues on Newsolio

COIT Cleaning Company Offers Tips to Combat Spring Allergies
News from RedOrbit:

COIT, a leading supplier of specialty cleaning and disaster restoration services headquartered in San Francisco, has some tips for managing spring allergies.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 21, 2012

“Many of our customers contact us because they suffer from spring allergies and want to minimize contact with allergens in their homes,” Bob Kearn, President and CEO of COIT, said. “A number of home and business cleaning practices can help, and there are also general steps allergy sufferers can take to minimize contact with allergens during the spring season.”

If you suspect that you have allergies, it’s a good idea to consult with your primary care physician. Your doctor can help you identify allergy symptoms, determine whether or not you would benefit from a visit to an allergist, and recommend medications that will address your specific symptoms. Over-the-counter options include oral antihistamines, decongestants, and combination medications. It is important to know what the best medication is for your symptoms, and whether any medications you might take interact with other drugs or could affect other medical conditions.

To minimize allergens in the home or office, COIT suggests that homeowners ask family members and guests to…………… continues on RedOrbit

Results from germ sample in Tulsa home revealed

Results from germ sample in Tulsa home revealed
News from KOKI FOX 23:

Last week, Elizabeth Cameron allowed FOX23 to swab germ “hot spots” in her house for cultures. The toothbrush, shower, washing machine and dryer were all swabbed and taken to Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences for testing. Biologists and professors in the OSU laboratory ran the samples through a series of tests.

Dr. Richard Glass is a professor of Forensics and Pathology at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences; he says the formula for germ growth is fairly simple. “Germs can thrive any place that it is moist or has a food source.”

Elizabeth said she was prepared for the biologists to find germs, “they are everywhere they are surrounding us.”

Elizabeth was right.

“The plates speak for themselves,” said Dr. Glass. The doctor explained to FOX23 that it is still preliminary in the testing to determine specific names for the bacteria but acknowledged that a range of growth was present.

* Toothbrush

Dr. Glass said he was surprised by the lack of organisms on the sample. However, Dr. Glass explained the bacteria that was present, “are potentially really disease produces.” The toothbrush culture revealed a chain of strep. “You don’t want to be brushing your teeth with a toothbrush that contains strep,” said Dr. Glass.

The Dirty Dozen: 12 Tips for Spring Cleaning
News from Patch.com:

When interior designer Brian Clay Collins  of Grosse Pointe embarks on his annual spring-clean at his northern Michigan home, it’s with glass cleaners, vinegar and lint-free towels in-hand, among other things.

“The absolute requirement for clean wood floors is warm water with a bit of white vinegar, used with a big sponge rinsed frequently,” said Collins, who owns Brian Clay Collins Design. “This is all done, alas, on hands and knees!!”

Like hundreds of other homeowners who now are focusing on sprucing up, freshening and deep-cleaning their homes, Collins swears by favorite products. For example, he prefers Glass Plus for cleaning glass “becaue it’s ammonia-free, so less likely to damage the silvering on mirrors.”

Dr. Jennifer Bonde, owner of the Birmingham Wellness Center, and the cleaning specialists at Troy-based Ask Alice Cleaning go “green” for their cleaning products.

“We only use eco-friendly cleaners in our home,” said Bonde, a busy mom of two. Method and Seventh Generation are two brands that emphasize natural ingredients.

“We’ve been using green products since we opened in 2007,” said Therese Spangler, Ask Alice’s operations manager.

Outdoor tips with Jack Morris
News from Tulsa World:

Listen to a conversation about postseason gear care with Jack Morris.

If you’re not extending your turkey season by hunting the northern states now is the time to clean up, pack up and repair all your turkey gear.

A great policy to adopt is to put everything away at the end of the season as if Opening Day was coming on again in just a few days.

Start with your most important tool, your gun or your bow, and run it through a thorough cleaning and maintenance check.

Those who use auto-loaders or pump guns, especially, need to break those guns down or take them to the gun store for a good thorough cleaning. You would be surprised the amount of miscellaneous stuff that gets into a gun’s action. Anything the gun has been around – from sand to feathers to blood – can end up jammed into that action.

Pay attention to that special turkey choke as well. All too often hunters don’t realize how well those…………… continues on Tulsa World

Household cleaning tips: Ironing
News from Newsolio:

How to Iron Clothes Quickly and Effectively

Paying a dry cleaner to press your clothes costs a lot, both up-front in fees and over time as your clothes wear out more quickly. Consider ironing at home instead by using these quick and easy tips.

First Things First

- Buy an iron that has heat settings for different kinds of cloth, and a non-stick coating on the hot plate.

Household cleaning tips: Ironing

- Buy an ironing board cover made from Teflon. These silvery-looking covers heat up as you iron so your clothes get pressed on both sides at once, and this cuts down on ironing time.

- Buy a spray bottle. Misting wrinkled clothes speeds up ironing time.

General Tips

- Read the iron’s instruction booklet. Some irons require filtered or spring water or they will rust, but other irons only work with tap water. Also, some irons turn themselves off if you forget to unplug them, but others may melt or start a fire.

- The best way to iron quickly and effectively is to smooth the cloth out first. Use your hand to push the fabric out as flat as y…………… continues on Newsolio
