Washington (CNN) – They are the size of marshmallows and the colors of peppermint twists.

And because some small children think they might be treats, laundry detergent gel packs — which recently hit the market — are proving to be a potential home hazard.

Authorities in the United States and in the United Kingdom say there has been an uptick in phone calls and hospitalizations resulting from children who have swallowed or otherwise been exposed to the gel packs of highly concentrated laundry detergent, perhaps believing them to be candy.

U.S. poison hotlines have received 2,950 calls concerning exposures to children 5 and under so far this year, with 734 calls in August alone. Not all exposures are poisonings or overdoses. No deaths have been reported.

“Because they are colorful and squishy, they are attractive to children,” warns the American Association of Poison Control Centers. “They can look like candy or something fun to play with.”

Stepping up for a DIY floor makeover
News from Chicago Tribune:

Sanding, staining and sealing can rescue a worn wood floor and transform a room at the same time — from dark brown to driftwood gray or vice versa. You might be tempted by a coverup of pre-finished laminate. But solid planks like 3/4-inch strip oak can stand a deep sanding that removes dings, scratches, stains and burns.

The project starts with an empty room closed off with plastic sheeting. Floor sanders create fine dust that will drift throughout the house.

Sanding You can rent the equipment that contractors use: a drum sander that turns a belt over the main area (with the grain) and an edger that turns a disc to blend in the perimeter. Drum sanders are heavy and pack a lot of power usually requiring a 25- or 30-amp circuit. The easiest type to use has a tip-up clutch — a lever that raises the drum so you don’t have to tip up the whole machine at the end of each pass. Most floors need only a finishing grit to clear the surface. More damaged or uneven floors need a pass with medium-grit first. The hard part for most DIYers is blending the edges where circular lines from the edger lap onto straight lines from the drum. You may need some hand sanding to finish.

Removing deep stains Burn marks and some liquid stains run more than skin deep. If most of the floor is marred, start with a coarse belt…………… continues on Chicago Tribune

Judson students clean 1940s mural from old Elgin factory

Judson students clean 1940s mural from old Elgin factory
News from Chicago Tribune:

Judson University students carefully blotted a mural with rags, wiping away decades-old dust to reveal brighter blues and greens.

The 11-by-15-foot canvas, which depicts a World War II factory scene, once hung on a wall in the Simpson Electric Company in Elgin — a factory that once produced war materials. Now, it lies across several long tables in a Judson building so art students can clean it and prepare it for display at the school.

The Elgin Area Historical Museum received the painting about two years ago when the Simpson building — which once housed the Illinois Watch Case Company — was being prepared for demolition, said museum director Elizabeth Marston. Because the museum couldn’t afford a professional restoration, Marston sought out other ways for the painting to be preserved, eventually offering the job to Judson University’s art students. In exchange for students cleaning the mural, the painting will hang at Judson on a three-year renewable loan from the museum.

Since the start of the semester, art student volunteers led by Assistant Professor Joe Cory, have been cleaning the large canvas, removing “70 years of dust and grime,” Cory said. They first use rags and an ammonia-based, natural cleaner, but later will move to more intricate cleaning with Q-Tips, he said. When it’s complete, they’ll construct a special mounti…………… continues on Chicago Tribune

Spic-and-span, homestyle
News from Buffalo News:

The kids are back at school, and you can almost see the dust settling as the whirlwind of summer activities is replaced by peace and quiet.
You can also see the fingerprints, the smudges, the stains in the carpet.
Rather than filling your house with the smell of chemical detergents – and paying a fortune for them – why not try some all-natural alternatives that have withstood the test of time?
Mary Miller, of the Town of Tonawanda, first started using natural home cleaners out of concern for her 19-month-old daughter, Claudia.
“It snowballed from making soap blends to use on my daughter at bath time to making the majority of household items in my own kitchen,” Miller said.
Using ingredients like raw local honey, washing soda and essential oils, she makes everything from toothpaste, deodorant and diaper wipes to bathroom scrub and all-purpose household cleaner. She likes them because she thinks they work better, aren’t full of harmful chemicals and aren’t tested on animals.
Perhaps best of all, they save her a ton of cash.
“We cloth diaper, so we do a lot of laundry in my house. After four months, I barely put a dent into the 15 or so pounds of detergent I made,” Miller said. “I imagine $ 20 worth of soap will last me at least a full year, if not longer.”
Think natural cleaners don’t have the same muscle as commercial ones?
Think again…………… continues on Buffalo News

Is your home ruining your health? 10 things to look out for

Is your home ruining your health? 10 things to look out for
News from Mirror.co.uk:

Laden with toxins, pesticides, gases, mites and moulds, it’s no wonder scientists from the US Environmental Protection Agency believe the air inside is more toxic than it is outside.

And as we spend 90% of our lives indoors, are we putting ourselves at greater risk of becoming ill or contracting life-shortening diseases? If so, what should we look out for?

Shower head

Scientists at the University of Colorado, US, say the slime that builds up inside a shower head is a breeding ground for bugs linked to lots of diseases.

Tests found 30% of shower heads contained Mycobacterium avium, a bug linked to lung disease and one related to the germ that causes TB.

What to do: The easiest and cheapest way to kill the bugs and get rid of limescale deposits is to soak your shower head in warmed white vinegar for 20 minutes, then wipe off with a kitchen towel.

Do it weekly.

Flooring

Plywoods, press board (like MDF) and other manufactured woods emit formaldehyde, which is used to glue them together.

Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds can cause nausea, dizziness and allergy symptoms and chronic exposure can damage your liver and central nervous system.

What to do: Make sure your home is well ventilated at all times.

There are lots of eco-friendly decorating m…………… continues on Mirror.co.uk
