Tips on cleaning your smartphone

Tips on cleaning your smartphone
News from ABC2 News:

Do you carry your smartphone everywhere?

It’s easy to set it down on the bathroom sink or on the mats at the gym, but take caution because you could be collecting germs.

A lab tested eight random cellphones for the Wall Street Journal. All of the phones showed abnormally high amounts of bacteria that indicated fecal contamination.

So how do we keep our smartphones clean? The lab tested cleaning methods like water, Windex, alcohol and electronic cleaning wipes.

Of all of the methods, water was the least effective, according to the article.

Phone companies warn using household cleaners to clean your smartphone could cause damage to the phone, particularly to the screen.

Reps for Apple, Blackberry and Android told the paper they have no recommendations for products that would safely and effectively clean smartphones.

Some options, a spokesperson for the company that makes Windex says they have a line of cleaner specifically for electronics.

Best Buy’s geek squad recommends a UV disinfectant wand, its light rays apparently kill germs.

Tips On Caring For High-Tech Engines

Tips On Caring For High-Tech Engines
News from North American Press Syndicate:

(NAPSI)—New technologies used in the engines of the latest cars may require drivers to rethink car care so that they get the most from their engines.

That’s because these newer technologies, such as direct injection, are generally more sensitive to the buildup of gunk, which can have a negative impact on an engine’s performance—even more so than in conventional engines.

Modern direct injection technology places the fuel injector directly into the combustion chamber, allowing for increased power and efficiency. However, the fuel injector is subject to greater heat and pressure, which can cause a breakdown of cleaning agents, allowing the buildup of gunk. This gunk can impair fuel flow, which can reduce power and efficiency.

On The Horizon

J.D. Power and Associates forecasts that in the next four years, the number of vehicles with direct injection engines will more than triple from the 10 percent reported in 2010.

With advanced engine technologies becoming more prevalent, car owners are looking for tips to best care for and maintain their cars.

Tips From The Pros

Holiday Food Safety Tips
News from TecheToday.com:

(StatePoint) Great food is the centerpiece of any holiday celebration, and practicing safe food handling in the kitchen is an important part of holiday meal preparation. There are certain steps you can take to keep friends and family safe from food poisoning.

“The kitchen can be chaotic and it can be challenging to keep food safety top of mind when dealing with a whole holiday meal, from turkey to trimmings,” cautions Shelley Feist, Executive Director of the non-profit Partnership for Food Safety Education.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in six Americans will get sick from dangerous foodborne bacteria this year. But these crucial safety tips can help you create a safe and tasty holiday celebration:

Clean

Prevent the spread of bacteria by keeping a clean kitchen and washing hands.

Cutting boards, dishes, utensils and counter tops should be washed with hot water and soap after preparing each food item, and before going on to the next. Keep plenty of clean cloth towels or paper towels handy for cleaning surfaces and drying hands.

Enforce a strict hand washing policy for all holiday kitchen helpers. Use warm water and soap for 20 seconds before and after handling food.

Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables under running tap water just before eating or preparing. Rub firm-skinned produce under running ta…………… continues on TecheToday.com

When talk isn’t cheap, why not put the money to good use?
News from The Gazette: Eastern Iowa Breaking News and Headlines:

The craziest thing happened when I went up to Minnesota to visit my mom last week.

She turned on the TV to watch the evening news and there were all these … advertisements.

No, not like you’re thinking. They were ads for things: Razors, cars, cleaning supplies — you name it. Ads selling stuff I could buy, not asking me to buy a line about Mitt Romney or Barack Obama. Never in my life would I have imagined feeling such relief at the sight of a dishwashing detergent.

Oh, sure, there were some ads for state races — here was Amy Klobuchar listing all the great things she’s brought to her constituents, there was House candidate Jim Graves making his case against his (in)famous opponent, incumbent Michele Bachman. But the words “47 percent” didn’t pass a single voice-over announcer’s lips. Not one. I know. It’s hard to imagine such a world. But I’m telling you, it exists.

Gardening tips from the Master Gardeners
News from Wayne Post:

With the warmth of recent days and temperatures predicted to be in the 60s it’s hard to think about winter but our average first frost date isn’t far off. Make sure you get your vegetable gardens and ornamental beds cleaned up before winter. Our Master Gardeners practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM) when maintaining their home grounds and fall garden sanitation is part of an IPM program. Removing plant debris not only decreases many plant diseases but also removes cover for over-wintering pests. Another important part of IPM is crop rotation. Before cleaning up those vegetable beds take a few minutes to make a map of this year’s plantings so you don’t plant vegetables of the same family in the same spot next year.

If you’re planting new trees this fall carefully inspect the roots to make sure none are encircling the trunk. Girdling roots can cause problems later if not taken care of at planting time. If you find any, carefully bend them away before backfilling the planting hole. It’s also important that the tree is planted so the top of the soil is at the trunk flare (where the trunk begins to flare out) and not higher on the trunk. Also, keep the tree well watered right up until the ground freezes and apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch making sure it doesn’t touch the trunk of the tree.

7 Tips To A Clean Bathtub
News from BoldSky:

If you are a fan of cleaning the bathroom regularly then you are certainly in the minority. Bathrooms really are quite a handful to keep clean so they are often ignored. Bathtubs that are left dirty soon become stained and unsightly. A dirty tub is no fun for anyone to bathe in, particularly for children or tired adults who want a relaxing hot soak at the end of a busy day.

So, how can you keep your tub clean and welcoming all the time? Try these seven simple tips to a clean bathtub and discover that it is not as hard as you might think and the rewards are definitely worth the effort.

1. Bleach It

To begin a new cleaning system it’s a good idea to get your bathtub back to its original sparkling self and that can be difficult if the tub has been allowed to build up grime and dark rings. Although bleach is very harsh but sometimes it’s the best way to start anew. Always read the label and be sure your tub can take heavy duty cleaning agent.

Remember when it comes to using chemicals you must follow the safety instructions such as wearing gloves, keeping the room well ventilated and avoiding contact with your clothes, skin and hair. With a thorough bleaching your bath could come up good as new and you’re off to a fresh start.

Tips to help you be safe while cleaning your gutters

Tips to help you be safe while cleaning your gutters
News from Chicago Daily Herald:

Every year, thousands of people clean out their gutters. But every year, hundreds of them get hurt doing it. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it — just be careful. Here are some super tips for getting the job done right and without breaking a leg!

If you are going to work alone, at least let someone know you are working so they can check on you occasionally. I still can remember watching my neighbor fall off his roof. If I hadn’t seen him fall, I’m not sure how long he would have been lying there. Choose a good, sturdy ladder. Make sure you use it properly and with all caution. And watch out for overhead power lines, some of which might be attached to your roof near the gutters.

Before starting to climb the ladder, assemble all of your work gear, including the right clothes. Wear long sleeves, a hat, safety glasses, gloves and rubber-soled shoes. You’ll also need a good scoop that will fit into the gutter and a garden hose with a spray nozzle attached. A plumbing snake also might be able to remove a downspout clog. It also might be handy to have some extra gutter spikes for securing loose sections, some repair caulk for any holes or rust spots and some leaf guards for the downspouts, if you don’t already have some in place. continues on Chicago Daily Herald

Minimize Pet Messes With These Tips
News from Patch.com:

Keeping the home clean and odor-free is a constant challenge for every pet owner.

Dogs and cats all shed at least some fur, even if they are billed as non-shedding or hairless. They bring in dust, dirt and pollen on their paws and coats. Birds molt seasonally, scattering feathers everywhere. Litter boxes, potty accidents, and vomiting by a sick pet can contribute unpleasant odors.

At my home, it never ceases to amaze me just how much hair two small medium-coated dogs can produce.

The dust-puppies that litter the stairs and corners seem never-ending. They disappear into the maw of my hand vac or are grabbed up by dry sweeping cloths, but then they reappear a day or two later, as if they’d never been gone. I don’t even want to think about what it must be like to live with a Nordic breed, German Shepherd, Beagle, Pug, Persian cat, or other animal with lots of fur or a fast-shedding coat.

But pet owners can have a sweet-smelling, attractive home with a good cleaning routine and the right tools.

It helps to schedule activities such as vacuuming or mopping so that they become a regular activity or to thoroughly clean just one room a day so the task doesn’t become overwhelming.

The following tips will help you keep pet hair and odors in check:

  • Dust first, then vacuum. Wiping surfaces with a damp c…………… continues on Patch.com

How To Fix It Yourself When a Major Appliance Fails

How To Fix It Yourself When a Major Appliance Fails
News from LifeGoesStrong:

If you own a home, then at one point you have probably been faced with this dilemma when a household appliance goes on the blitz: do I fix it or replace it?

If you’re frugal like I am, then probably your first course of action is to try to fix it yourself. You don’t have to be a super genius handyman to try your hand at fixing a washing machine or getting your dishwasher back up to speed. There are website and YouTube videos to help you along

Remember last February, when I was convinced that my dishwasher was broken because it wasn’t cleaning my dishes properly? Here’s what I wrote:

I could call in a handyman to see if he could fix the dishwasher but that, too, would cost hundreds of dollars. As a last ditch effort, I decided to Google “dishwasher not cleaning dishes” to see if there was anything else I could try.

Many of the websites I ended up on after that Google search suggested the same fixes I’d already tried—using a rinse agent and/or adding vinegar to the wash; these were suggestions to deal with the white film that was likely a result of our having hard water and no water softening system. I was about to give up when I landed on the website…………… continues on LifeGoesStrong

Tips And Tricks For Easy, Elegant Get-togethers

Tips And Tricks For Easy, Elegant Get-togethers
News from North American Press Syndicate:

(NAPSI)—Party hosting duties can be rewarding and exhilarating, yet daunting when confronted by the level of cleaning and preparation that goes into even a casual get-together. Food Network star Sandra Lee has a few hints for time-starved hosts and an easy, tasty recipe to help decrease time and money spent on entertaining, as well as increase fun.

Chef Sandra Lee’s Party-Planning Tips

Prepare smartly. Eliminate multiple shopping trips by planning storage space ahead of time. You can be all set for a crowd of just about any size with the help of a fridge that holds enough to feed everyone at your party. For instance, the largest French-door model available, LG’s Mega-Capacity Refrigerator, offers state-of-the-art storage space, keeping all your dishes fresh until festivities begin, leaving you more time to mingle.

Keep it simple and casual. Serve food buffet style and allow guests to help themselves. Just make sure the buffet station is close to the kitchen, so it’s easy to replenish trays without walking through the crowd.

Every party has a few guests who arrive early. Provide small snacks such as nuts, olives and cheese for them to nibble while you finish setting up.
