Easy carpet cleaning tips and tricks

(BPT) – Carpet provides good traction, absorbs noises, and saves homeowners money because it naturally insulates a room. And, contrary to popular misconceptions, carpet that is cleaned regularly is fine for people with allergies. The best practice for keeping carpets consistently clean is having a regular maintenance routine. Refreshing carpets is easy with these tips from the experts at the Carpet and Rug Institute.

Create a vacuum schedule – Removing soil when it’s on the surface, before it gets tramped down, is the first and most important step in carpet maintenance. Use slow, repetitive motions that overlap (about four swipes), ensuring you get right up to the edges where dust, pollen and pet dander like to accumulate. How often do you need to vacuum? Generally once a week is a good place to start, but depending on how frequently the area is used, you’ll likely want to do it more often.

Treat stains the correct way – Up to 98 percent of carpet is manufactured in the United States, and most is made to be stain-resistant. No matter how hard you try to prevent them, however, stains do happen, so it’s important to act quickly. Scoop up solids and blot liquids with a dry, white cloth or paper towel, starting at the edge of the spot moving toward the center. Do not scrub – it can damage carpet and…………… continues on LubbockOnline.com

Cleaning products are not subject to labeling guidelines, so it takes a little research and guidance to know just what is in the products you are considering.

Have you ever stopped to think about the chemicals in a product like drain opener, strong enough to dissolve clogs often made up of hair? Chemicals in household cleaning products that leave your sink sparkling may also be doing damage to your health. If you’ve ever had to open a window to avoid a headache from fumes or cope with skin irritation caused by direct contact with a cleaner, you already know that there’s a problem. But when you’re in a big-box retail store stocked to the rafters, it can be hard to know how to buy non-toxic products or determine which ones pose the greatest risks — few have detailed labels that spell out the n…………… continues on Willits News

Save money in just an hour with a new dimmer

Save money in just an hour with a new dimmer
News from Chicago Daily Herald:

Used to be that the dimmer switch was put on ceiling fixtures to help you add ambience to your room. In the past, they were limited to only certain light fixtures but, throughout the past few years, they have been improved to work just about anywhere. They are easier to install on a wider variety of fixtures.

Well, it turns out that they also are a super way to turn energy usage down.

If you have average DIY skills, you probably can remove a standard light switch and install a dimmer easily and start saving money in just an hour or so. Here are the basics of how’s it’s done.

• Make sure you turn the circuit breaker OFF to the switch that you are going to replace.

• Remove the switch plate cover, and then remove the screws holding the electrical switch in the box. Pull it forward so you can have access to do the wiring.

• Before removing any wires, check the instructions for the dimmer to make sure you understand it fully before moving forward. You should also check to make sure there is enough room in the old box for this new, larger switch and the wires. Replace the box if you need to. It’s not good to stuff the wires into it too tightly.

Buffing Up the Butler

Buffing Up the Butler
News from New York Times:

CAN housework help you live longer? A New York Times blog post by Gretchen Reynolds last month cited research linking vigorous activity, including housework, and longevity. The study, which tracked the death rates of British civil servants, was the latest in a flurry of scientific reports crediting domestic chores with health benefits like a lowered risk for breast and colon cancers. In one piquant study published in 2009, researchers found that couples who spent more hours on housework had sex more frequently (with each other) though presumably not while vacuuming. (The report did not specify.)

Intrigued by science that merged the efforts of a Martha with the results of an Arnold (a buffer buffer?), this reporter challenged a household expert and a fitness authority to create the ultimate housework workout — a houseworkout — in her East Village apartment. Perhaps she could add a few years to her own life while learning some fancy new moves for her Swiffer. continues on New York Times

Holiday Decorating: Inexpensive, easy tips for cleaning up after Christmas
News from WRAL.com:

Posted: 8:20 p.m. today

Beverly Kain, a mom of two in Cary and owner of House-N-Order, an interior decorating and organizing company, offered some Christmas decorating tips earlier this month.

Now that the wrapping paper is cleaned up and the cookies are nearly gone, it’s time to think about breaking it all down and stashing it for next year.

Here Kain shares a few inexpensive and easy tips for cleaning up the Christmas decorations:

  • Use the core from a paper towel roll or sturdy gift wrapping roll to store lights. What you need to do, is cut a slit in the top of one end to slide the plug in and then wrap the lights around the roll. This will keep them from getting tangled and from giving you a headache when it’s time to use them again. Store with bubble wrap.
  • Stack wreaths on top of one another with a protective layer between each one and put them in a large bin
  • For small ornaments, you could use an egg carton. Just wrap any breakable ornaments in newspaper or bubble wrap.
  • Whe…………… continues on WRAL.com

Children mistake laundry ‘pods,’ medication for candy

Children mistake laundry ‘pods,’ medication for candy
News from Billings Gazette:

A 3-year-old child was recently brought to the Billings Clinic Emergency Department coughing, gagging and spitting up soap bubbles.

The child had mistaken one of her mother’s multicolored, gummy-like laundry detergent pods for candy and attempted to eat it.

“The child ate it all,” said Dr. Ron Winters, the emergency room physician who first encountered the child. “Apparently they are not that noxious in taste.”

He referred the child to St. Vincent Healthcare, which has a pediatric intensive care unit.

It is the first known incident in Billings, but it is happening with such frequency across the nation that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning to parents about the bite-size packets. It says exposure to the detergent pods is an emerging public health hazard in the United States.

In a 30-day period this past summer, there were 1,008 cases of detergent poisoning among children, according to the CDC. Of those cases, 486 were linked to pods, neon-colored packets of laundry soap.

Ninety-four percent of poisonings from laundry detergent are among kids younger than 6, according to the CDC report. And, those who ingested pods were usually sicker than those who ate other forms of laundry detergent.

Dr. Jeffrey DeMare, a pediatric intensivist at St. Vincent Healthcare, said that with the single-dose ca…………… continues on Billings Gazette

The best stain removers for those holiday mishaps

The best stain removers for those holiday mishaps
News from ConsumerReports.org:

In a matter of days many homes will be swarming with all manner of friends and relatives and the treats, decorations and messes they leave behind. Don’t be surprised if you have wine spilled on your oriental carpet or candle wax melted on your grandmother’s tablecloth. In fact, you should expect it and arm yourself with both store-bought and homemade stain removal treatments. Here are some tips from our experts on how to remedy the most common holiday mishaps.

Spills on carpet or fabric. For wine, first blot it with water. Next use the detergent solution below. For red wine you can then dab with 3 percent-strength hydrogen peroxide. (Make sure the fabric is colorfast first.) For soda spills, blot the area with the detergent solution, then use the vinegar solution, also below. Rinse with warm water. If a trace remains, dab with 3 percent-strength hydrogen peroxide.

White rings on wood. Blot the spot with an absorbent cloth, wipe with a damp cloth to help dissolve the stain, and then dry with a soft cloth. If the stain remains, apply a little non-gel toothpaste, or liquid or cream car polish, rubbing with the grain. Wipe with a dry cloth and polish, if needed.

Lipstick on cloth napkins. Blot the lipstick with acetone-based nail-polish remover. Then try a store-bought cleaning solvent, such as Afta or…………… continues on ConsumerReports.org
