Washio picks up your dirty laundry, dry cleaning with the tap of an app

Washio picks up your dirty laundry, dry cleaning with the tap of an app
News from Washington Post:

Attention all lazy 20-somethings, time-strapped professionals and overtired parents: Put down the laundry detergent and pick up your smartphone.

A mobile application called Washio officially launched in the District Thursday with a promise to gather up your dirty laundry and dry cleaning, send it to be professionally cleaned and return it to your doorstep the next day.

Indeed, the on-demand app culture that brought you car services like Uber and Lyft and delivery services like Postmates now wants to give you a hand with your hamper.

“The reality is dry cleaners across America have always been a convenience-based service,” said founder Jordan Metzner. “You need to be a certain amount of distance with a customer’s home to get their business.”

It doesn’t get much closer than Washio.

Customers summon one of Washio’s “ninjas” to pick up their laundry or dry cleaning during a 30-minute window in the morning or evening. Items are returned 24 hours later — washed, fluffed and folded.

Old-fashioned cleaning, healthy alternative | HomeWork
News from The Seattle Times:

Q: What home-cleaning products are safe for the environment?

A: There is a greater awareness among homeowners that chemicals in commercial home-cleaning products can have negative effects on personal health — not to mention the environment.

Many are turning back the clock when it comes to cleaning and rediscovering old-time cleaning recipes — many of them used before the advent of the synthetic formulas widely available after World War II.

Believe it or not, you can handle nearly all of your day-to-day cleaning with just seven easily available, inexpensive, environmentally benign ingredients: baking soda, washing soda, soap flakes, oil soap, vinegar, borax and ammonia. And of those, only ammonia is potentially hazardous in its concentrated form. Just use it carefully, and store it out of the reach of children and pets.

Kitchens and baths

Instead of using commercial products to clear your kitchen sinks, faucets and drains, give baking soda a try. Just dampen with water and apply it the same way you would with scouring products. Unlike bleach and phosphates, which are common ingredients in commercial cleaning products, baking soda isn’t toxic to the environment and won’t kill the bacteria that sewage and septic systems need to work properly.

When baking soda is combined…………… continues on The Seattle Times

A Signature Washing

Dear Heloise: If I wash a shirt that has an AUTOGRAPH ON IT written in permanent marker, will the autograph come out? — A Reader, via email

That is a tough question. Permanent marker is meant to be permanent! However, repeated washing (especially with hot water) and drying probably will make the autograph fade. To be safe, it’s better to hand-wash it (turn it inside out first) using only cool water and a mild detergent. Roll it in a towel to squeeze out water, and hang to dry, or drape over the shower curtain. Hope this helps! — Heloise

Tips for Cleaning Up and Managing Space on Your iOS Device
News from Touch Arcade:

It’s a problem. iOS device space is at a premium. Each year, the hardware improves in iPhones and iPads which leads to even bigger and more impressive gaming experiences. Because of this, the games themselves are also increasing in size. A game topping the 1GB mark is the norm, with many games even hitting the 2GB and 3GB mark when actually installed on a device. That’s not even taking into account movies, music or other media which can take up precious device space. As an owner of a 64GB iPhone, the largest capacity iPhone available, even I have trouble juggling which apps and media to have installed at any given time, and frankly there just isn’t enough space to have everything I want installed at once. I can’t even imagine what life is like for 16GB device owners, or even owners of older 8GB devices.

The good news is that there are some steps you can take to ensure you’re always maximizing your device’s space limitations. Vovin, a long-time TouchArcade forum member, has taken it upon himself to write up a little guide on doing just that. It’s titled

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Influenza and norovirus season is in full swing, and health officials say cleaning your home is part of the defense you need to put up to fight getting sick.

The flu virus can live a day or two on surfaces in your home. The tougher norovirus can survive up to two weeks, according to Tri-County Health Officer Justin Denny, MD, with the Multnomah County Health Department.

“It’s likely to be spread in your household; it’s hard not to. Typically every one [norovirus] case causes two more, and if you don’t clean up causes 14 more. That’s why cleanup is so important,” said Denny.

Fortino Barajas says his Maids by Trade cleaning service is busy right now, with clients wanting a good cleaning after viruses infected their homes.

Road salt tracked onto floors can cause damage, so gently wash away salt stains as soon as you see them.

Ask a Builder: how to remove mold from your home

Ask a Builder: how to remove mold from your home
News from Fairbanks Daily News-Miner:

FAIRBANKS – Q: How do I remove mold found in a house?

A: Mold is a type of fungus that decomposes dead organic material. We encounter mold every day — some foods, drinks, and medications are derived from molds, mold grows outside on decaying trees and other materials, and mold spores, the reproductive cores by which mold reproduces, are found virtually everywhere. Problems arise when molds are given a chance to grow in homes.

Moist areas tend to create an environment that is attractive to molds where spores can land and grow into mold colonies. Visible examples of moisture and mold prone areas in a home would include bathrooms, areas around window frames, kitchens and cooler spots on exterior walls behind furniture or in closets where air doesn’t circulate well. Concentrated areas of mold growth are dangerous to have in a home and should be removed. A colony will release mold spores, which can cause respiratory issues or aggravate asthma and allergies. This is the first of a two-part series on mold. Next week, we will address how to prevent mold growth in a home.

Q: Should I clean up the mold myself?

A: You usually can clean small ar…………… continues on Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
