Pesticide protection can include the family’s washing machine, welcome mat
News from Prairie Star:

Do you chew tobacco or gum while you work with pesticides? Ever wash your hands off inside the house? And where do you wash your clothes when you are done spraying?

These are questions that most producers don’t think about, but they should.

Recent testing by the Agriculture Health study found pesticide residues on the carpets in farm homes, inside washing machines and even on kitchen counters and sinks where hand-washing occurred and chemicals were splattered onto surrounding surfaces.

When cleaning up after using pesticides, Cecil Tharp, the Pesticide Education Specialist with Montana State University, recommends washing up outside and rinsing off rubber boots and chemically resistant gloves in an area away from the home and family pets.

“Have a wash bin where you’re breaking down your equipment and scrub everything with a brush,” said Tharp. “Use a heavy detergent and ammonia to help break down insecticides.”

Any water rinsed off clothes, boots, hands and even equipment is safe to pour into the ground but, according to Tharp, if you’re rinsing out pesticide containers, that water has to be captured and returned to the tank for proper disposal.

At the house, take off boots before tracking contaminants inside the house. Have mats in place at the doors to catch dirt and undress in a contained area away from oth…………… continues on Prairie Star

Tips to Spring Clean Your Deck and Patio
News from Seaside Courier:

(StatePoint) It’s the time of year when sprucing up your deck and patio becomes a top weekend priority. Whether you use the space for entertaining or for solitude, you’ll want it clean, comfortable and safe this spring.

Take time to dust off your outdoor furniture and wipe down cushions that have been in storage all winter. Inspect flower pots, bird feeders and other outdoor décor to ensure they withstood the cooler months. Replace anything that is damaged.

Before setting furniture and décor back, give the surface below a good clean. Whether you’re dealing with cement, brick or wood, the quickest and most thorough way to deep clean and restore surfaces to a like-new condition is with a pressure washer. Knowing how to use one properly is important for a quality job and for your safety.

Usage Tips

• Different surfaces require different cleaning techniques. Ensure you’re following the instructions for the surface you’re cleaning.

• Always read and follow the operator’s manual and all operating instructions.

• High-pressure spray can cut through skin, so never spray people or animals. Wear closed-toed shoes and goggles while pressure washing.

• Assume a solid stance and firmly grasp the spray gun with both hands to avoid injury if…………… continues on Seaside Courier

Electronic Security Association ensures working smoke alarms on each floor and outside of every sleeping area

Each year, more than 3.4 million children experience an unintentional injury in their homes. To help keep little ones safe, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) recommends these safety tips.

Keep dangerous items out of reach

The National Capital Poison Center reported that 52 percent of all poisoning victims in 2012 were under the age of 12. To ensure children don’t become a part of the statistic, it’s important to take extra precautions to keep them away from dangerous household items.

Designate a cabinet or two that are only accessible by adults for potentially hazardous items. Common household products that could be fatal if ingested include cleaning supplies; medicine; alcohol; dishwasher and laundry detergent; and personal hygiene items such as perfume, mouthwash, nail polish and nail polish r…………… continues on SourceSecurity.com

News from BUSINESS IN BRIEF 24/2 – VietNamNet Bridge:

E&Y upbeats about VN’s economic prospect

There is an optimistic prospect for the Vietnamese economy in the coming time. With growth held down to about 5% in 2012 and 2013, policy makers will target faster expansion from 2014.

According to the Rapid-Growth Markets Forecast of the Ernst & Young (E&Y), Viet Nam ranked 4th among 25 countries which have fastest growth rates and are vulnerable to seven risks namely current account, external debt, government debt, inflation, growth in credit to GDP, import cover, and currency change over year.

Viet Nam’s GDP would touch 5.4% in 2014, the forecast said.

The growth rate is set to pick up to the 7% target by 2016 thanks to the Government’s effort to reduce the fiscal deficit and use lower inflation to bring down borrowing costs.

The multinational professional services firm reported that CPI inflation would stand at 6.5%; current account balance (% of GDP) 1.6%; exchange per US$ (year average) 21,508 in 2014 and 22,000 in 2015.

E&Y said that a strong rebound in FDI commitments will underpin the financing of the external deficit that is expected to reappear from 2015.

This will calm concerns about the stability of the Vietnamese Dong (VND) that have resulted from low reserves.

FDI will promote a shift away from textiles and…………… continues on BUSINESS IN BRIEF 24/2 – VietNamNet Bridge

Best laundry detergent for your money

Best laundry detergent for your money
News from Dayton Daily News:

If you’re looking for the best laundry detergent for the money, look no further than the house brand at one of my favorite stores.

The latest issue of Consumer Reports gives “best buy” checkmarks to two detergents for front or high-efficiency (HE) top-loaders. Both show that it’s entirely possible to pay twice as much for roughly equivalent cleaning power from the industry leader… but why would you want to?!

  • Wisk Deep Clean (liquid) costs 14 cents a load and scored an 80 on a scale of 100.
  • Costco’s Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean (powder) costs 9 cents a load and scored a 73.

Both of those “best buys” are much cheaper than Tide Ultra plus Bleach Vivid White + Bright HE (powder), the highest-ranked laundry detergent of all. At 23 cents a load, the Tide offering got an 82 yet failed to clinch the magazine’s seal of approval.

Target’s Up & Up HE (liquid) — a previous “best buy” winner — raised the price per load in the latest tally from 11 cents to 13 cents, but only scored a 67 this time out.

When it comes to laundry detergent for standard top-loaders, the only one to get the “best buy” checkmark was Tide Plus Bleach Alternative Vivid White + Bright. At 18 cents a load, it scored a lowly 61 — still the best score in its class.

Not really into commercial laundry detergents? Try making your own at ho…………… continues on Dayton Daily News

Hints From Heloise: At best, it’s a request
News from Washington Post:

Dear Heloise: I was distressed when an attorney informed me that my older pets could not be included as a part of the updating and finalizing of my WILL. But I was able to include (in the will), as a REQUEST, that my wishes be carried out concerning them. He stated that the request (their euthanasia and cremations at a specified facility) are not enforceable. He stated, “Who is going to check?”

I was heartbroken. Laws may vary from one state to another. My dinnerware will be bequeathed, but my beloved pets’ care and final resting place are considered only a request. — Heartbroken in Texas

You are a very caring and loving pet owner. I hope my readers will stop and think about this and try to make plans for their pets, just in case something happens. The Humane Society of the United States recommends that you have at least two friends or relatives willing and able to carry out your wishes concerning your pets. Provide them with your veterinarian’s information, keys to your home and care instructions for your pets BEFORE an emergency occurs, because pets need care every day. — Heloise

Tips for cleaning up your yard from this brutal winter

Tips for cleaning up your yard from this brutal winter
News from Allentown Morning Call:

The most obvious damage from winter weather is broken tree limbs, uprooted trees and downed wires. Delay all but the most immediate cleanup or repairs until you have an OK from your insurance carrier. Document any damage and contact your agent promptly.

Any limbs that cannot be reached without a ladder, are too large to handle safely, near power lines or extending over buildings should be handled by a professional. Make sure that anyone you hire to work on your trees is licensed (as an arborist) and insured. Ask for estimates before any work is done and request references.

And what about that snow: Should you remove it or let it slowly melt on your precious landscape plants? As always, it depends.

Plants well-suited to the region’s climate, structurally sound and healthy will often survive the winter unscathed. Old, sick, improperly pruned or improperly planted specimens frequently will lose limbs or uproot.

If the temperatures are frigid, snow is small and light and doesn’t cling to plants. When the temperature rises and approaches freezing, the snow is wet and heavy. This is the snow that breaks wires, downs limbs and causes power outages. So what do you do?

If the snow is heavy, brush it off with gentle upward movements to gradually reduce the weight. Avoid strong downward sweeps that could snap the frozen bra…………… continues on Allentown Morning Call

Use best products and methods to clean floors

Use best products and methods to clean floors
News from The Detroit News:

Whenever I walk into a home, one of the first things I notice are the floors. And when I say “notice,” I mean what type of flooring the home has and how well is it maintained. Unfortunately, there isn’t one cleaning product or method that can work on all the different flooring that most homes have today.

After a winter of tracking in mud and snow on your shoes, or all the leftover food spills from the holidays, your carpet is ready for some TLC. Obviously, spot cleaning dirt and spills and regular vacuuming helps. But carpets also need some serious deep cleaning once or twice a year depending on your foot traffic.

If you want to try to clean it yourself, you can use one of those home carpet-cleaning machines or rent one from the hardware or grocery store. Unfortunately, these portable machines don’t create enough of a vacuum to extract all the water and cleaning solution from carpeting. That’s why professionals with truck-mounted cleaners do a better job than you can.

In addition to carpeting, many homes have wood and laminate floors that need regular maintenance. If you have hardwood floors that are dull, use a quality hardwood floor cleaning system such as Bruce Hardwood and Laminate floor cleaner (
