This Is How Preppers Do Spring Cleaning
News from ABC News:

The words “spring cleaning” may conjure images of sparkling kitchen counters and dust-free closets, but there’s another part of your life that could use a clean sweep too, according to experts in emergency preparedness.

It’s time to spring clean out your emergency kit.

“We recommend doing it every six months and basically setting it as a tradition,” said Phil Burns of the American Preppers Network, who offers tips on how to make sure your kits are up-to-date. “On Easter and Halloween is when I reset all of my bugout kits.”

Phil Burns/American Preppers Network

Phil Burns of the American Preppers Network recommends updating your preparedness kits twice a year.

A “bugout” bag, according to those in survivalist groups, is the bag you can grab in case of an emergency that has supplies in it to take with you for up to 72 hours.

The bag should have food supplies, including shelf-stable granola bars, powdered milk, jerky, dried soups, or freeze-dried meals, as well as water or water purification systems, clothing and emergency shelter like tents and blankets. Basic medical supplies and too…………… continues on ABC News

Spring Cleaning Tips to Detox Your Body

Spring Cleaning Tips to Detox Your Body
News from Idaho State Journal:

(NewsUSA) – Spring is here, and if your thoughts turn to spring cleaning your house or office, don’t stop there. Take the opportunity to spring clean your body, too. Variations on the process of body detoxification have been elements of many traditional health practices, including ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.

Consult your health care provider before starting a body detox regimen, but data suggest that most individuals without chronic medical conditions can undergo a simple detox, and the simplest of plans is this: Drink more water. Consistently drinking water each day can help rid your body of toxins even if you do nothing else. Data suggest that many American adults don’t drink enough water, although it is essential for maximum health.

“Without water, no living thing can survive,” emphasizes Robert Eakle, CEO of Alkame Water. Water affects every area of our life and is an essential part to maintaining proper health,” he adds.

Mobile spring cleaning: 5 universal tips for iOS, Android
News from kdvr.com:

(Photo: MGN Online / Consumer Priority Service)

Spring cleaning is a reality in households across the country this time of year, whether we like it or not. And the truth is, you should probably be doing the same with your mobile devices.

If you’re interested in tidying up your mobile world a bit, here are five tips to get you started.

Turn off location permissions: Did you once give an app permission to access your location? In the case of many apps, that means they’re constantly utilizing your device’s GPS capability and draining your battery. It’s easy to turn off location permissions for certain apps on both iOS and Android devices.

Turn off push notifications: Annoyed about the persistent push notifications you’re getting from apps? (Never from the FOX31 Denver app, though, of course!) There are simple solutions to turning notifications off on both iOS and Android. For iOS,

Spring cleaning with a green twist

Spring cleaning with a green twist
News from Northern Virginia Daily:

By Katie Demeria

Both Earth Day and Arbor Day encourage people to think twice about their environmental impact. For members of Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, even spring cleaning should take on an environmentally friendly twist.

The group offers some suggestions on green, homemade cleaning products that can be used to avoid dumping chemicals into the environment, according to education coordinator Cindy Frenzel.

“We’re finding that a lot of the chemicals that we use around the house that go down the drain end up in the environment,” Frenzel said. “There’s like a soup of chemicals in the rivers in our country, and it might just be a little bit of a whole lot of different chemicals, but when it’s all mixed together it can do some harm.”

She said everybody can make a difference if they decide to use a green alternative to the traditional products, or even to use smaller amounts of the harsh cleaners they need.

Though not everyone has time to make their own products, even opting for environmentally friendly store-bought products can help, she said.

The trick is finding the right recipe that works for each individual.

“We tried the dishwashing detergent and decided that it didn’t work for us because it left a film on the dishes,” she said. “If you can live with that, or if you can re-rinse your dishes, it…………… continues on Northern Virginia Daily

When Your Spring Wardrobe Smells Like Last Summer’s Sweat
News from New York Magazine:

Spring is here: Time to swap the wool sweaters in your closet with the linen-blend cardigans and viscose blazers under your bed and celebrate. Yet this is a precarious time of year, smellwise. It is the season of the sudden flush. Brought on by a swampy commute, a spontaneous dance party, or the sheer thrill of knowing you’ve escaped a polar vortex, spring body heat can activate something foul and pitlike lying dormant in your wardrobe. It is the ghost of last year’s sweat. It is BIBO.

BIBO — rhymes with Tebow — means “built-in body odor,” and naturally the term was coined at an all-girls school (hat tip, Sally Holmes, formerly of the Cut). You washed the blouse, you put on deodorant, and yet, a half an hour after leaving the house, you’re apologizing to your friends fo…………… continues on New York Magazine

Spring cleaning safety tips
News from 14 News WFIE Evansville:

SATURDAY, April 19, 2014 (HealthDay News) — While doing their spring cleaning, families will use a wide range of products that can cause accidental poisonings, an expert says.

But taking appropriate precautions will reduce the risk of danger, said Earl Siegel, managing director of the drug and poison information center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio.

“It is vital that people arm themselves with basic information on poison prevention in the home, such as keeping chemicals out of the reach of children and carefully reading the labels and dosages on all products,” he said in a hospital news release.

Tips for preventing poisonings during spring cleaning are offered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Keep cleaning products in their original bottles or containers. Don’t store them in cups, bottles or jars. Never sniff containers to determine what’s inside.

Keep cleaning products locked up and out of sight and reach of children.

Read the label before you use a cleaning product. And never mix products together; doing so could create a dangerous gas.

Open windows and turn on fans when using cleaners or other chemicals. Also, wear protective clothing — long sleeves, long pants, socks, shoes and gloves — if you’re spraying pesticides or other chemicals. Stay away from…………… continues on 14 News WFIE Evansville

University concept paper gave birth to a thriving business

University concept paper gave birth to a thriving business
News from The Star:

Calm, collected and confident are words that best describe 27-year-old entrepreneur and managing director of Keep it Kleen Ltd, Esther Ndegwa.

A commerce graduate from KCA University, she conceptualised the company as part of her project while still a student but upon graduation and a string of unfruitful job interviews she decided to actualise her concept.

Two years down the line, she has gained ground in the competitive industry with a growing portfolio of new and loyal clients. Through determination, hard work and aggressive marketing, the business has grown from a simple laundry service to a commercial cleaning outfit covering a wide array of cleaning jobs.

Keep it Kleen Ltd handles laundry, house and office cleaning to post-construction cleaning. The company also specialises in surface stain removal. Esther says that you “just name the stain and we take care of it”.

So what drove this business greenhorn from KCA University into starting her own company?

After graduating in 2011, she was bubbling with excitement and energy as a fresh graduate and embarked on seeking an office job but several applications and job interviews down the line she was still jobless.

At one of the job interviews, she was shortlisted as a finalist but the panel settled on someone else who had work experience. Though disappointed, what amazed her abo…………… continues on The Star

Tips To Clean Aluminum Utensils

Tips To Clean Aluminum Utensils
News from BoldSky:

You own quite a lot of metal utensils apart from the steel ware and earthen pots that keep your house complete and full. Keeping the utensils clean and giving them a long life is indeed a task. You would see that the metal plates that accompany you to your home require special care and attention, and when given that they don’t intend to wash off easily.

Most people carry with them silver plates and cups. This silver ware has a special place indeed which is not stolen by any other metal. Normally the silver ware comes out on special occasions for dining and other purposes.

While silver ware enjoys a distinct importance in the lives of the people, the other metal that has a specific importance in the way it is dealt with in homes is aluminum. Even aluminum has come across as an important metal for cookware and dinner sets. You would possess a lot of aluminum dishes too as part of your utensil rack.

Cleaning aluminum is a major affair. While the aluminum is lying on the shelf or is being used, chances of aluminum oxide building up along the cook ware are high. You would find hints of corrosion along the sides and parts of the cookware. Here are some ways you can clean aluminum utensils without really affecting it majorly.

Spring cleaning tips from the pros

Spring cleaning tips from the pros
News from Kansas.com:

Natural dryer-sheet alternative

Blogger Sherri Griffin recommends simple-to-make wool dryer balls for laundry. They decrease drying time, eliminate static cling and decrease wrinkles, she says. Essential oils can be added to them every few loads to softly scent clothes.

Supplies:

100 percent wool yarn

Pantyhose

Essential oil (optional)

Directions:

1. Wrap wool yarn around two or three fingers at least a dozen times, then make a bow by wrapping yarn tightly around middle of wrapped yarn. Bring the two sides together and continue wrapping tightly in different directions to make a small ball the size of a lemon. Repeat to make several balls.

2. Push the wool balls into one pantyhose leg, knotting the pantyhose between each ball so they don’t touch. Run through the washer with a load of towels on hot cycle, then toss into dryer on hot. Once dry, remove from pantyhose. Each ball should appear “felted” – the wool fibers tightly adhered. Snip any loose strands.

To use:

1. Scent balls with essential oil, if desired (it’ll last a few loads).

2. Toss at least two balls into dryer with wet laundry. continues on Kansas.com

4 Ways Living Green Benefits My Cats and Myself

4 Ways Living Green Benefits My Cats and Myself
News from Catster:

I’ve always veered toward the earthy and the green. The more I learned about living green (and I know that’s a vague term with a lot of meanings), the more I put it into place in my own life. Gradually, this spilled over into decisions I made about the health and care of my cats. I fed them good food when I could afford it. I tried a green form of cat litter (made of wheat), but none of my cats took to it.

But largely, I found that my green endeavors fell into the cleaning category. Everything I use is free and clear, or fairly inert, due to human allergies and sensitivities. Here are some of the things I think about in my everyday life, regarding green cleaning and having a green house, for the benefit of both the humans and the cats:

1. I use relatively harmless ingredients in my (mostly homemade) cleaners

It’s really simple around my house. Hard surfaces get cleaned with free-and-clear soap and water; floors might get the same, or that plus some white vinegar. For carpets, I have an awesome Dyson vacuum (the model especially for pet households). I love it because it does a fantastic job, and there are no filters to buy and throw away. You simply rinse and reuse the inner filter. But I am getting away from rugs, as well, which seem to harbor so much gross stuff the longer you have them. The Dyson does a fantastic job on hard floors, especially…………… continues on Catster
