Local psychologist gives tips for spring cleaning your life

Local psychologist gives tips for spring cleaning your life
News from Alabama’s News Leader:

Some of us like to do spring cleaning. It de-clutters the house. What if the same principles were applied to our lives? A soured relationship, a bad habit, even a messy social media page may need some cleaning up. As psychologists would say, it’s all about clearing the clutter. Apparently, spring is the perfect time.

One reason spring is right for “top-to-bottom” cleaning is because windows can be opened . That allows chemicals and dust to escape. Psychologist John Gampher says we need to create an opening for the toxins in our life to escape as well. There are practical ways to get a clean start.

Gampher says spring cleaning our lives boils down to one concept.

“It’s all about reinforcement. It’s about that good feeling that you get from something, which is reinforcement,” he said.

Focusing on the end result, and how it makes you feel, encourages the behavior that gets the positive results. In the case of spring cleaning a living space, Gampher says keep it practical.

“If you’re cleaning out a room, clean out room that you go into frequently so that you get the reward. If you clean out a back closet, or a closet in your garage that you never go into, then you’re never getting reinforced for that behavior, which is cleaning,” he said.

For some, the problem isn’t a particular space. Rather, it’s about who shares time and…………… continues on Alabama’s News Leader

Quick and Easy Spring Cleaning Tips

To many spring cleaning is an annual tradition.  Spring cleaning welcomes a great opportunity to simply throw open the windows, let some fresh air in, while making your home clean, happy, and energy efficient.

To make things a little easier, our experts have assembled home-based tips that will help you keep your house in tip-top shape any time of year.

Plumbing Tips

1. Check the flappers on your toilets at least once a year. If they are showing their age, replace them before they start leaking and wasting water.

2. Clean your bathroom fans. Take the cover off, wash it in soapy water and clean dirt off the fan blades with a toothbrush. Be sure the power is off when you do this!

3. Remove all faucet handles and clean their insides to keep the screws from corroding.  Use a rust remover if necessary.

HVAC Tips

1. Before the beginning of a new season, make sure to check your air-conditioning and schedule a tune-up. An annual tune-up can preserve your system for years.

2. Check and replace your air-conditioning filters every month. There are several types from which to choose, depending on your specific model.

3. Most air conditioners have a drainage hole on the base of the cabinet, beneath the evaporator fins. This hole…………… continues on TheAlternativePress.com

How to Tackle 10 Home Cleaning Tasks With Just 5 Green Ingredients

How to Tackle 10 Home Cleaning Tasks With Just 5 Green Ingredients
News from One Green Planet:

When it comes to cleaning, frugality bodes well. Making your own all-natural potions and powders costs much less than buying that something straight off the supermarket shelf. Plus, the environmental impact of less chemicals is much milder, leaving the conscience a little cleaner as well. All you need is five easy ingredients and you’re in business!

1. Baking/Washing Soda

It’s nothing dramatic. All you do is take common baking soda and heat it up in the oven, which slightly changes the chemical makeup. Washing soda won’t clump together like baking soda, and it has a grainier (i.e. more abrasive) quality.

2. Castile Soap

Basically, this is soap made with oil (traditionally olive oil) versus animal fat. Dr. Bronner’s is the easy way to do this, and it comes with pleasing aromas to boot. However, it’s possible and supposedly simple to make your own castile soap. But, vegans be warned: Lye becomes proble…………… continues on One Green Planet

SALLY FRIEDMAN: Closet cleaning makes for a Sunday well spent
News from South Jersey Local News:

I still remember those immortal words.

“We’ll never fill these closets!” I had proclaimed when we moved into our new digs 10 years ago. We had come from a marvelous old house that had enormous charm — and terrible closet space.

So seeing the abundance of closets in this thoroughly modern condominium was overwhelming. And the laundry room, in particular, absolutely blew me away. I rejoiced that there were two huge, cavernous closets. Standing there, staring at its vast emptiness, I vowed to keep them in perfect order.

OK, that was then.

I’d be hard put to explain how, in the intervening years, both of those closets became the repository for everything in the house that we didn’t know what else to do with. And I do mean everything.

Disorder had gone viral. Even the detergents and other laundry supplies, which had a rightful place in those closets, had been swept aside, homeless refugees left to rest on the lid of the washing machine.

But there comes a time when things get so out of control and so jumbled that just finding anything at all is an act of prayer and faith.

And there came the Sunday when the hint of spring was motivation enough. The reckoning had come.

I waited until my husband had finished watching the Sunday TV news shows that are stitched into his Sundays and inviolate. To gain an instant advantage, I…………… continues on South Jersey Local News

Choosing Wash Formulas (Conclusion)

Choosing Wash Formulas (Conclusion)
News from American Laundry News:

CHICAGO — “The only constant is change,” the old saying goes. Laundry operators know this to be true, and when it comes to the elements that affect wash formulas, change is especially ever-present.

While the four basic variables for achieving good cleaning results—processing time, water temperature, chemical action and the washer’s mechanical action—are mainstays, even they must make room for additional factors, both internal and external to an operation.

Finding the right mix of chemicals, resources and procedures is often a combination of careful orchestration and constant vigilance.

To help uncover the most important factors to consider when choosing a wash formula, American Laundry News polled several vendors about changing chemical composition, new health and safety initiatives, and ways that a facility’s management and personnel can help or hinder wash-formula selection.

STAYING HEALTHY, GREEN AND CLEAN

Chemicals can have an impact on the environment as well as the health of the people who come into contact with them. The laundry industry continues to be affected by new requirements and regulations for safe chemicals, and efforts to keep up are ongoing.

Kevin Minissian, vice president at Norchem Corp., says that the company, like most chemical suppliers, is focused on developing environmentally safe products an…………… continues on American Laundry News

‘Conscientious living’ ideas catching on
News from The New Indian Express:

Activist, best-selling author, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, Gene Baur and many others like him are advocating conscientious and responsible living not just in America but across the world.

A ripple effect from all their work is creating awareness about exploitation of natural resources. But it’s not just the West that is looking out for more sustainable ways of living and taking to animal protection, environmental consciousness and greener lifestyles.

Who in this consumerist society would change their lifestyle to go natural, you say? Well, quite a few. People across Bangalore are transforming their lifestyles and making kinder choices to do their bit for the environment. Leather-free materials, garbage segregation and composting are becoming more and more popular.

A few years ago, Piyush Lunia and Pankaj Khabiya decided to quit on leather, but could not find any quality alternatives. After much research, they came up with a new material to substitute leather with, and launched Ethik in Church Street which sells a range of ‘vegetarian’ shoes, handbags, wallets and belts. “This material is a polymer fibre that leaves hardly any residue and uses no solvents. These shoes are recyclable, and three times more durable than leather. It does not cause pollution in any way. This way, animals are not harmed, nor is the environment,” Piyush exp…………… continues on The New Indian Express

Tips, just in time for spring (cleaning)
News from The Southern:

Tips, just in time for spring (cleaning)

How do your cleaning skills compare to those of pros who’ve earned homeowners’ shining reviews?

Just in time for spring, here are some tips, tricks and tools of the maid trade, supplied by highly rated cleaners our research team recently interviewed:

Vacuum right with the right vacuum

Weekly vacuuming is key to clean carpet. Do it more often if you have pets or kids. And consider this three-step approach to power-sweeping a room:

1. Clean the perimeter with the edging tool.

2. Begin at the far corner and move backward so you don’t leave footprints.

3. Vacuum slowly and steadily; this works better than numerous quick passes.

Cleaners prefer lightweight machines that feature HEPA filters to remove allergens and which come equipped with easily released attachments and long hoses that fit under furniture and reach ceiling corners.

More expert cleaning tips:

• Remove rust stains from a shower by making a paste of hot water and powdered oxygen cleaner. Apply to walls and glass doors and let sit for 30 minutes. Scrub with a nylon scrubber, rinse with hot water and buff dry.

• To clear smudges from dark granite countertops, wipe down with soapy water and buff dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth

• Remove dirt and debris from tiny…………… continues on The Southern
