We advocate to buy your produce as organic and locally-grown as possible. St. Louis, Mo. (PRWEB) June 10, 2014

Moving into the summer months, it is becoming especially important that homeowners are taking the necessary steps to keep their homes clear of spiders and other summer pests. With the warmer weather, spiders will become much more active in seeking out cooler locations such as the inside of a home. They are seeking sources of water and to get out of the heat. There are some simple steps which can be taken to make sure that a home is well cleaned and prepared to prevent pests and spiders from seeking refuge inside.

One of the simplest ways that homeowners can clean the inside of their homes to maximize pest prevention is to clean out all the places where food is stored, such as cabinets and fridges…………… continues on The Edwardsville Intelligencer

Healthy housekeeping tips offer a fresh approach to spring cleaning

Healthy housekeeping tips offer a fresh approach to spring cleaning
News from Idaho State Journal:

(BPT) – After the long and cold winter experienced across the United States, families will be tackling spring cleaning with a passion this year. But for more than 40 million Americans living with allergies and 25 million with asthma, housekeeping comes with extra concerns and responsibilities. More than half of all homes in the U.S. have at least one person dealing with allergies or asthma, so spring cleaning needs to focus on removing common household allergens and irritants, and avoiding problems that some cleaning supplies could actually create.

“Allergen avoidance and environmental control are important parts of any asthma and allergy management plan,” say Dr. Beth Corn, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Director of the Division of Immunology Faculty Practice Associates, “that means a patient should try and avoid contact with allergens like dust mite particles and pet dander that can be found in the dust of most homes. Exposure to irritants, like strong scents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be found in some common household cleaners should also be avoided by patients with respiratory issues.”

If your cleaning routine doesn’t specifically focus on allergen control and removal, you may be only moving dust around,…………… continues on Idaho State Journal

Tips for Cleaning Up Your Digital Life

Tips for Cleaning Up Your Digital Life
News from Fox Business:

With so much of our time spent online nowadays, protecting our digital lives should be a top priority—but it’s hard to stay ahead of the hackers.

“Security has become a really hot topic, as it should be,” says Hugh Thompson, chief security strategist and vice president of Blue Coat Systems. “People don’t think about spring cleaning digitally, but it’s pretty critical and important nowadays.”

To help protect your identity, experts suggest giving your online activities a thorough cleaning, and they recommend starting with your social media actions.

Any accounts that you no longer use should be shutdown. “One of the biggest reasons to get rid of those things is you just don’t know what’s happening on them,” says Thompson. “For example, there could be a privacy setting change or the social media provider may now be different.”

For social media sites that you use often, be sure to review their privacy settings at least once a year (experts prefer more often) to make sure you understand any changes and know the best way of safe guarding your information.  You should also check out what your profiles look like to other viewers.

Oriental rug home care

Spot clean with plain water,  since some cleaners can actually set the stain. “Use water and a white towel to work the stain out,” says Wade Shehady of  Shehady’s Oriental Rugs. After cleaning, elevate it with a little cardboard so it can air dry. No hair-dryer!

Blot pet stains quickly with dry paper towels. “Urine must be caught quickly because the acidity will strip the colors,” he says. “Pat with a paper towel first, then dilute with water and alternately pat until it is gone.”

Mud is a different story. “Do not try to rub it out. Wait until it dries, then lightly rub it into a powder and vacuum. Do not use more moisture. You will just make more mud.”

Vacuum lightly. “You just w…………… continues on Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Shippers send more boxes of groceries from Doral to Venezuela

Shippers send more boxes of groceries from Doral to Venezuela
News from MiamiHerald.com:

Faced with unprecedented scarcity of basic household goods, a growing number of Venezuelans are beginning to depend on shipments from their relatives and friends abroad to obtain basic products difficult to find in their supermarkets. The trend is prompting many South Florida residents to go to shipment agencies more frequently.

Companies specialized in shipping boxes to be delivered at people’s front doors in Venezuela say that boxes now carry products not usually sent to that country. Amazon books, spare parts for cars and electronic items are now being replaced with cans of tuna, rice packages, coffee, medicines and even bathing soap.

“I have just completed a full shopping for my mother because she lacks everything I am sending. I even bought her dishwasher detergent,” said Andreína Cesarino, who works at one of the many shipping agencies operating in Doral.

“I’m sending her shampoo because there is no shampoo there. It’s not only food they need, but items of personal use,” added Cesarino, who at the company Venesend takes care of dozens of Venezuelan customers.

Despite their huge oil revenue, Venezuelans are close to living in miserable conditions hardly ever seen in the history of their country, and must now stand in line for hours to enter supermarkets where shelves are empty.

Economists attribute the pheno…………… continues on MiamiHerald.com

Home improvements: Clean up with washer tips
News from The National:

Here are some tips to help you keep your washing machine and dishwasher running at an optimum performance level.

Run a cycle with an empty load at least once a month to clean out old particles of debris and oil build-up. Fill the detergent compartment with a specified cleaning agent and select a programme that runs at a high temperature.

Always make sure you choose a suitable programme for the type of cycle needed – machines offer a range of programmes, from eco-settings to intensive washes, to ensure that you get the optimum and most efficient performance needed.

For your dishwasher, ensure salt and rinse aid are topped up, as this will affect the cleaning of your dishes. Without rinse aid, you may notice your glassware going cloudy after a few cycles.

Wipe the door seals of your washing machine and dishwasher regularly with a damp cloth, to remove any accumulated residue, and empty the filter regularly for any debris that has been caught during a cycle. Finally, don’t overfill the dishwasher or washing machine, as this will reduce how effective the clean is.

Tips for keeping your house clean

Tips for keeping your house clean
News from Metro Weekly:

How’s that whole “spring cleaning” thing working out for you? Did you realize summer is mere weeks away?

“People think of ‘spring cleaning’ as such a huge, big thing, and then they put it off and put it off,” Sohini Baliga says. “But really, if you break it into little chunks it’s that much easier.”

Baliga is a consultant with the local cleaning company Maid to Clean, and her biggest tip for any plan of attack is to

clean in baby steps, a little at a time, as you have time.

“There are definitely people who want to set aside a day, do it all in one go and be done with it,” Baliga says. And then there are the rest of us, who procrastinate and then get distracted or interrupted, feeling overwhelmed, undone. “The worst thing you can do is save it all for one time because then it’s like climbing a mountain,” agrees Cathy Green, co-owner of UpperCrust Maids. “And then you are just forcing yourself to even get started.”

Green suggests you start with the hidden spaces, from closets to the pantry to the basement. “Places where you stuff things when visitors are coming,” she laughs. “True spring cleaning is when you get rid of the hidden stuf…………… continues on Metro Weekly

WEDDING BARGAINS. When I worked in a bridal shop in Florida, we bought all of our jewelry, gloves, veils and most headpieces wholesale from Accessory Wholesale in New Orleans. To my surprise, they now have a website (awnol.com) that is open to the public. For my own wedding, I bought all my bridesmaids jewelry sets, bracelets, my headpiece and my gloves and jewelry – all for about $ 100 including shipping. That site rocks! Note: This is a wholesale company, so there is a minimum order requirement of $ 75.

PLAY ‘N ERASE. I pull all sorts of worksheets, fun sheets and thinking sheets out of children’s magazines and kids’ worksheets I find online that are printable. I slip them into plastic protective pages I get at the office supply store (about $ 5 for a big package). I put the worksheets into the plastic sleeves. My kids use dry erase markers to learn and play. When done, we erase their work so we can use the fun papers over and over again.
