I Got 99 Parenting Problems but I Always Flip Over One

I Got 99 Parenting Problems but I Always Flip Over One
News from The Stir:

The other day I was putting dirty clothes in the washing machine when I noticed the box of dryer sheets had gone missing. Not the contents of the box, mind you, the sheets themselves were strewn all over the place nearby: piled haphazardly on the shelf where I keep the detergent and whatnot, scattered across the tops of the washer and dryer, and drifting gently around the floor.

You’ve heard of the idiom the straw that broke the camel’s back, right? The idea that cataclysmic failure is triggered by a seemingly inconsequential action? In terms of overall parental frustrations for the day, that stolen box of dryer sheets was definitely my final straw. It’s always something dumb like that, something that in the grand scheme of things doesn’t seem worth getting mad about. But that’s the thing about having a breaking point … eventually, you break.

See, if I’d discovered the dryer sheet mess first thing in the morning, I’d probably have filed it under a minor annoyance and moved on. But on that day, the kids had been testing my patience for hours on end, and I’d been cleaning up messes left and right all day long. I was feeling crushed by the Sisyphean tasks of parenthood (clean the kitchen, make lunch, oh look, I get to clean the kitchen again!) a…………… continues on The Stir

How to keep your jewelry dazzling

How to keep your jewelry dazzling
News from Chicago Tribune:

Proper care of jewelry will extend the life of the piece, whether it’s an inexpensive bauble or an heirloom.

The most basic step in caring for bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and watches is to be mindful of how they’re worn, jewelry experts say.

“Showering, washing dishes and cleaning the house are everyday tasks that make it easy to forget the jewels on your hand,” said Jerry Ehrenwald, president and chief executive officer of the International Gemological Institute. “When cleaning or handling chemicals, you should always remove your rings and store in a safe place. Bleach and other cleaning agents can dull the finish of a ring and damage porous colored gemstones.”

For watches, keeping moisture away is the most important step an owner can take to keeping timepieces ticking properly, said Terry Irby, technical director for watchmaker Tourneau. Even one drop of water can wreak havoc.

The same goes for other products such as skin and suntan lotions, hair spray, insect repellent and perfumes, Ehrenwald and Irby said.

Flooding causes addressed; tips for cleaning up
News from Southgate News Herald:

While it’s been almost a week since the severe flooding in the Downriver area Aug. 11, some residents might still have questions about its cause and how to recover.

Wyandotte City Engineer Mark Kowalewski addressed why water was spewing from a manhole cover in the city.

“The system was overwhelmed,” he said.

Kowalewski said the city’s sewage line and rainwater sewer system are one entity and the rain came down too fast in such a short period of time.

“The water has to go somewhere,” he said, adding that was the same reason water came up through residential basement drains.

“The pipe itself is full; the water has nowhere else to go.”

According to Kowalewski, the last time the city experienced a significant flooding issue was in September 2000.

Mold clean-up tips
News from Detroit Free Press:

■ When inside a flooded basement or building, wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles and boots.

■ Hose down the inside of the basement/structure to remove health hazards from possible flood water mud. Shovel out as much mud as possible. Quickly remove the water you use during this cleaning.

■ Clean and dry out basement or structure thoroughly, and optimally within 24 to 48 hours after flooding, to help prevent the growth of mold.

■ Help the drying process by using fans, air-conditioning units and dehumidifiers.

■ If flood water did not get behind the structure’s walls, you can reduce the chances of mold and mildew formation in basements and homes by wiping down all flood water-affected surfaces. Use a solution of one cup of liquid household bleach to a gallon of water.

■ Never turn power on or off or use an electrical tool or appliance while standing in water.

■ Throw away any food that has come in contact with flood waters and dented or damaged canned goods that may have become contaminated.

■ Replace any drywall and insulation that has been soaked by flood waters.

■ Remove and discard carpeting, rugs, drywall, mattresses, furniture and other items that cannot be washed and disinfected if it is believed that they came in contact with flood water mixed with raw sewage.

■ When cleaning, never mix bleac…………… continues on Detroit Free Press

How to Clean Everything in Your Fall Wardrobe, From Beaded Sweaters to …
News from Glamour:

You thought the cost of fashion today was high? Wait till you get the dry-cleaning bill. From beaded sweaters to leather everything, clothes have never been costlier or trickier to care for. We delve into the risky business of dirty laundry.

Handle with care! The age of machine-washable fashion is going, going, gone.

Fashion blogger Bryanboy recently told me a story about a Lanvin T-shirt he bought. It was embroidered with jewels, trimmed in tulle, and came with a price tag of $ 800. More shocking than its retail price, however, was the cost of its maintenance. After a dry cleaner in the Philippines ruined it, he purchased a second. (The man loves his fashion.) When it came time to clean that one, he FedEx-ed it to the famous cleaner Madame Paulette in New York City. The T-shirt was returned good as new, but at a price: $ 80 for cleaning, $ 300 for shipping. Ouch. And this isn’t just a #fashionperson problem. In a year when leather sweatshirts surfaced everywhere from Givenchy to Zara, the question arises, What to do after you take these pieces home, wear them, sweat in them, and—God forbid— spill something on them?

I came face-to-face with this problem las…………… continues on Glamour

Washing Machine Concept Uses Robot Fish to Clean Clothes without Detergent
News from PSFK:

Industrial designer Chan Yeop Jeong from Korea has created a washing machine design concept as part of the Electrolux Design Lab. Pecera washes clothes without detergent, instead using robotic fish that eat people’s dead skin cells and dirt inside the clothes.

The collection of robot fish (called ‘Dofi’) offer an effective and sustainable way of removing dirt and cleaning clothes. They were inspired by doctor fish, which can make people’s skin clean and healthy by feeding on dead skin or an affected area. The Dofi run on hydroelectric power and clean garments by detecting dirt with a tiny embedded camera.

Their sucker-shaped mouth washes the clothes by easily eating the dirt, as the alkaline liquid jelly of each Dofi splits and absorbs dirt molecules of fiber sustainably to clean it. When the jelly touches the fiber, it loosens the coherence between the fiber and dirt on the clothes to split, feed on, and absorb it.

While there is concern over oxidation and discoloration of fiber when using detergent, this eco-friendly way of washing using the alkaline liquid jelly prevents oxidation and discoloration of fiber, so consumers don’t have to worry about damage to the…………… continues on PSFK

9 tips to speed cleaning
News from Charlotte Observer:

Some people love to clean and glory in gleaming porcelain, burnished wood and sparkling glass. For most of us, though, cleaning is a time-eater and anything but fun. Try these speed-cleaning tips to ease the pain and improve your results:

1 No more smelly sponges: A sour sponge makes your whole kitchen smell and is riddled with bacteria. Buy a wire sponge caddy to store sponges odor-free. Plastic sponge holders don’t let enough air circulate, and sponges never lie flat.

2 Rescue grease-stained clothes: Did a stick of lip balm go into the wash and stain your clothes? Use Carbona’s Laundry Devil No. 5 for grease to remove the evidence. carbona.com

3 Keep baseboards clean: The anti-static properties of a dryer sheet will help keep dust and animal hair from accumulating on your baseboards.

4 Organization is key: Use bread bag clips to mark electrical cords. Upended hairspray caps can fill in the space between drawer organizers and corral tiny items like swabs, bobby pins, medicine tubes and flossers.

Procter & Gamble: consumer product company announces it will dump about 90 …
News from WPTV:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Procter & Gamble is cleaning house.

The nation’s largest consumer product company, will be dumping about 90 of its smaller, less popular brands. The move, announced Friday as executives discussed earnings with investors, will still leave the company with portfolio of 70 to 80 brands. Company officials did not immediately identify the names of the brands being cut. Some will be sold to new owners, others will just be closed down.

P&G will continue to sell many of the best known products found in American households, including Tide laundry detergent, Charmin toilet paper, Gillette razors and Pampers diapers, Crest toothpaste and Bounty paper towels.

The brands the company is keeping account for 90% of the company’s annual sales of $ 83 billion.

“We’re going to create a faster growing and more profitable company that is far simpler to manage and operate,” said CEO A.G. Lafley. “Less will be much more.”

Lafley didn’t mention anything about whether the move would affect jobs at the company.

Shares of P&G jumped more than 3% in trading Friday following the brand announcement and earnings report. But shares are still slightly lower for the year.
