METRO DETROIT — That laundry basket of clean clothes isn’t going to fold itself, and those messy kitchen drawers would be much more functional if organized.

For anyone who doesn’t like to clean house — or feels overwhelmed by the task and can’t seem to get started — local housekeeping experts have several tips that will turn your untidy house into a neat and orderly home. For starters, the housework does not have to be done all at once, which is sometimes why people quit before they begin. Instead, try completing simple projects one at a time.

“You have to decide to set aside 15-20 minutes a day to tackle one thing,” said Kris Sallay, owner of Maid Today in Troy, which is celebrating its 25-year anniversary. “That way, it doesn’t seem like a pheno…………… continues on C&G Newspapers

DIY tips: Clean your makeup brushes
News from Arab News:

Washing and cleansing makeup brushes should be a regular part of every woman’s beauty routine. Makeup brushes usually pick up bits of makeup, oil, dirt and even bacteria that can get trapped in the bristles, No one can imagine using the same brush knowing how dirty and disgusting it is on a closer look.
According to makeup artist Layla Ghassan, everyone is guilty of leaving dirty makeup brushes a little too long between washes. “The easiest way to do it is knowing how important it is because skipping the cleaning part might harm you as well as the brush,” she said. “You don’t only have to clean your brushes, you also need to let it breathe and be hygienic for different reasons,” she added.
Spot cleaning is a way by which you can clean your makeup brushes using alcohol as a main ingredient of the cleanser. “This will help take out all the excess makeup from the brushes. This is meant to be done daily, especially if you use the same brushes everyday,” said Ghassan. “It’s a great way to remove eye shadow colors from the brushes. You can fill a bottle with the cleanser and spray it on the brush. Use it at the same time when you use your makeup and the alcohol will help dry it quickly,” she added.
If you don’t have a cleaning fluid, make your own spot cleaning cleanser. “Alcohol is very important when it comes to cleansing…………… continues on Arab News

6 Tips To Keep Your Marble Floors Bright, Shining and Clean

6 Tips To Keep Your Marble Floors Bright, Shining and Clean
News from LifeHacker India:

Every time, someone mentions Taj Mahal, the eighth wonder of the world, and admires its beauty, I only think of the pristine, shining marble it is made up of and wonder: can my home’s marble floor remain so clean always? No wonder, my fascination with the pristine white marble made me do some research. And I came up with these handy tips, using which one can keep the marble floors and slabs of their home in the pink, or should I say white, of its health.

1. Use Marble Sealers: Some stones like soapstone, granites and travertine are so dense that liquid cannot penetrate. However, stones like marble easily absorb liquids and stain very fast.
Applying a sealer creates an impenetrable shell and keeps the stain near the surface. So, you get some time to remove the stain. Study the nature of the marble before applying the sealer.

1. Polish Marble: Polishing to some extent decreases the absorbency rate of the marble and it also brings out the colour of the stone. However, polishing does wear out and needs to be done once in a while. If you want your marble floors to shine just like in five star hotels, then polishing is a must.

2. Clean Spill Immediately: Marble gets stained quickly and it is sensitive to acidic substances like wine, coffee, fruit juices, tomato sauce, sodas, cleaning and toiletry products. If…………… continues on LifeHacker India

4 Tips for Filtering, Chilling and Cleaning Up To Ensure Clean and Safe Milk
News from Mother Earth News:

In my previous posts on making clean milk I covered the definition of clean, how to find a healthy cow, how to set up a clean milk parlor and how to milk. Now I will discuss filtering, chilling and cleaning up.

1. Filter With the Quickness

After milking, I release my cows from the parlor and take the milk to my milk room. This room is a lot like a kitchen, kept clean and free of any animals. In our barn the milk parlor is downstairs and the milk room is upstairs. In here I filter my milk with a stainless milk strainer into a separate stainless milk can (for making yogurt or cheese) or directly into half-gallon jars (for sippin’ milk). It’s important to filter relatively quickly after milking to get any hair, dirt or manure ou…………… continues on Mother Earth News

Adjusting to widowhood no easy task
News from Cherokee Tribune:

Juanita Hughes

Because of constant change, life is just one adjustment after another. After 80 years, I’m beginning to learn how to roll with the punches.

But widowhood — well, that’s an adjustment that calls for extra patience and fortitude. I have some great role models. They set wonderful examples, and I’m learning a lot. I’m afraid I didn’t pay much attention when the widow I knew best — my grandmother — became a widow. In my memory now, it seems her life changed very little.

Papa’s illness had been long and difficult, and once he was gone, she picked up the pieces and seemingly reestablished the lifestyle they had shared when all was well. She was not alone, though, since my mother was with her until her death. My grandmother never knew an empty house.

Somehow in thinking about her in connecti…………… continues on Cherokee Tribune

Single-load laundry packets could be harmful to children
News from Enid News & Eagle:

The new single-load detergent packets populating store shelves might make doing laundry quicker and easier, but if young children happen to get ahold of one of the packets, it could make them sick.

Usually detergents cause a mild upset stomach or possibly no symptoms at all. But, after being exposed to the single-load packets, some children have experienced excessive vomiting, wheezing and gasping; serious breathing problems; and severe irritation and scratches to their eyes. In some cases, children were hospitalized.

According to a study published Nov. 10, 2014 in the journal, “Pediatrics,” more than 17,000 children younger than 6 years old ingested, inhaled or splashed the packets in their eyes or on their skin in 2012-13. The study used data from the National Poison Data System.

This unfortunate trend is a strong reminder to parents and caregivers to keep detergents and other laundry products out of the reach of children,” said Gina Peek, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension housing and consumer specialist. “Really, we should treat these products the same way we treat all cleaning or hazardous products we keep around the house.”

Best way to disinfect the bathroom

Need a quick and easy way to clean a bathroom? Melanie Williams of Apex swears by this method: “Take some paper towels, soak them with alcohol, wipe everything: toilets, tile, cabinets, tub and sink fixtures, floors (vinyl, tile, etc.) and mirrors. Buff with dry towel to shine. The alcohol will dry quickly, so it can be used on just about anything, plus it disinfects. I have been using this method for over 40 years so (I) never needed a lot of expensive cleaners.”
