Here is the Eagle’s 2012 wish list from nonprofit social service organizations in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties that need donations and volunteers.

Animal services

EVRC provides food, shelter and vet care for injured and orphaned Kansas birds of prey so they may return to the wild. Cash, landscape river rock, cedar or cypress mulch, 1-by-12 No. 2 pine boards, 4-by-4, 5-by-5 and 6-by-6 treated posts, volunteers during spring and fall cleanup.

Homeward Bound Pug Rescue, P.O. Box 8036, Wichita, 67208, 316-683-2933, www.homewardboundpugs.com. Rescues pugs and fosters them until they find a home. Cash for medical care for the pugs, adoptive parents, foster parents, volunteers.

Hope in the Valley Equine Rescue and Sanctuary, 9025 N. Broadway, Valley Center, 67147, 316-519-4129, hitveras.org. Provides healing and rehabilitation for horses that have been abused, neglected, starved or are headed for slaughter. Cash, round hay bales, equine senior feed, mineral and salt blocks, wormer.

It is the season of giving.

And during the next several weeks, South Sound residents have an opportunity to open their hearts and spread some holiday cheer through The Olympian’s Light of Hope.

Look in today’s paper for a mega-list of holiday wishes compiled by local agencies that screen and work with folks in need. Anyone who would like to help someone on the list is encouraged to contact the organization directly.

They are groups such as Barb’s Family and Friends, an Olympia-based nonprofit that organizes free community meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“The numbers have grown to really, really huge proportions,” said Rodney O’Neill, whose late mother, Barb, began the tradition more than 40 years ago. “We went from serving 1,500 people a year, to serving over 4,000 people a year (through the organization’s various projects).”

O’Neill operates a barbecue catering and food cart business and recently opened Barb’s BBQ 3 at 1500 Jefferson St. in Olympia.
