Campgrounds mostly avoid serious damage from Irene

For 5-year-old Corinne Edele, the wind and rain of Tropical Storm Irene dulled in comparison to the post-storm trauma of not being able to use the pool at Strawberry Park campground.

“I like to swim,” said the young vacationer, who, with her parents, Chris and Jennine, and brother, Damien, 9, made the annual trip from Manorville, Long Island, to enjoy Connecticut’s outdoors.

“We’ve been coming here for several years, and we weren’t going to let the storm change our mind,” her father said.

Tropical Storm Irene didn’t deter campers at Strawberry Park or Hide Away Cove Campground in Dayville — both sites were without power as of Monday night.

The Edele family rolled up the canopy on their recreational vehicle, put away the lawn chairs and packed the screen tent that protects them from mosquitoes, and huddled together as the storm hit.

“It really wasn’t too bad,” Chris Edele said. “The only problem is that without power, we can’t use the pool.”
