With kids home, friends over, and humidity high, July and August are prime time for disease-carrying grime.

“You’re more prone to bacteria and fungal infections at this time year,” says Family Practitioner Dr. Aaron Gunthrie of West Florida.

But as our local experts explain, keeping your house clean and your kids healthy during the stickiest time of the year might be easier—and much cheaper—than you think.

But a clean house starts with cleaning up any misconceptions. Gunthrie says a common misconception among consumers is that most germs are found in the bathroom.

“I think there’s a little misconception of where the germs are in the house,” he says. “A lot of people assume it’s in the bathroom… The kitchen actually harbors more than the bathroom.”

That’s hundreds of thousands more, according to Sandy Hernandez Director of Environmental Services at Baptist Hospital.

“The kitchen drain has 500- to 600,000 particles of bacteria,” he says.

Added to that are dish rags, dish towels and sponges, which can also host thousands more germs. And while the kitchen might top the list as the germiest of all rooms, bathrooms aren’t exactly germ-free. In fact, you might be surprised to find out where many those potty germs might collect (of course, ignorance is bliss.)
