Is it safe to clean your ears with a cotton swab?

It’s perhaps the most common question asked of Dr. Christopher Hampson—an ear, nose and throat physician at Midwest ENT Consultants. The answer is one that everyone should pay attention to: Dr. Hampson says you should never use cotton swabs (such as Q-tips) to clean your ears, because cotton swabs can be very damaging to the ears, particularly if pushed too far into the ear canal.
