Experts say caution, focus important for after storm clean up

Experts say caution, focus important for after storm clean up

After the waters recede, the task of cleaning up damage from floodwaters may remain for many area residents.

The task can be a daunting one, but organizations like the Red Cross and N.C. Cooperative Extension offer tips to help residents determine what needs to be done and how to do it safely.

“Cleaning up after a flood is going to be a big task and it will help to think about what your priorities are before you start,” said Robin Seitz, an extension agent at the Onslow County Cooperative Extension center.

Before beginning the clean-up process, make sure that it is safe to enter the building and address safety issues first. If an electrical system has been flooded, it should be checked by an electrician. If a fuse box is located in a flooded basement, do not turn electricity on until the water has been pumped out, Seitz said.
