Jill Squyres remembers the exact moment when a 30-year friendship died.

“I was growing tomatoes in the backyard and was really proud of them, because it’s hard to have a garden in the summer in San Antonio,” said Squyres, now based in Vail. “And I said, ‘Come out to garden and see my tomatoes!’ And my friend said, ‘No. Why would I want to look at your tomatoes?’ And her visit went downhill from there.”

Squyres had known this friend, who shall remain nameless, since they were both 17. But as a Ph.D. clinical psychologist with 27 years of experience, Squyres also knew her friend’s lack of interest in seeing her tomatoes was part of a larger problem: a fundamental lack of caring about what made Squyres happy.
