Inside the wet, corrosion-scarred turret of the USS Monitor, conservation assistant Tina Gutshall lies belly down on a strip of plywood, peering intently through her protective glasses into a 5-inch-wide pocket of marine concretion.

Encased by iron rails, the rock-hard vein of sediment, minerals and rust looks like an unlikely target for the buzzing tip of her needlelike point scribe. But as she passes her vibrating tool over the surface for the umpteenth time, you can just see the fibrous tips of a piece of rope beginning to emerge from the reddish-orange deposit.

How many hours it’s taken to probe this far, Gutshall doesn’t know — and many more hours of tedious and physically taxing work will be required over the next few weeks before the artifact can be recovered. But she’s just part of…………… continues on Daily Press
