Hope Through Christ Ministries seeks these items for its warming center: Wash cloths, toothbrushes, bar soap, toilet paper, razors, tampons, first aid supplies, pillowcases, laundry detergent, Ziploc bags, plastic cutlery, plates, bowls, paper towels, Kleenex, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, dish soap, canned goods, boxed food, cereal, hot chocolate, coffee, shoes, boots, socks, coats, scarves, hats and underwear.

They come looking for shelter and warmth, but find so much more.

Again this winter, Hope Through Christ Ministries in Baraboo is operating a warming center to keep homeless people safe from the cold overnight.

People who arrive seeking a warm bed also are treated to meals, clothing, toiletries and shower access. They often forge friendships, as well.

“There’s a lot more to it than I think meets the eye,” said Lisa Burckhardt, who began using the warming center in November because she couldn’t find affordable housing. She had been living in her car.

“We have a bed, we have a roof over our head, we have food in our stomachs,” she said.
